If people are animals and/or biochemical machines then why is it a crime to kill them?

That's hard to answer......
I think it's the fact we can do more than most animals like talk and cartwheel and pick up things. Most animals can't do that. Because we can express feeling its also a reason because say someone robbed your wallet, wouldn't you want to do something to the like punch them or maybe kill them. But if we could just kill someone without going to jail more than half the world would be dead. We also are closest to those of out same kind for us it's a human and because there are more humans than mostly any animal on the world think therefor that's the reason. I'm sorry if this is incorrect but I tried my best.

"If people are animals and/or biochemical machines "

As opposed to being what?

I think there are questions of what is pain, suffering, sentience, and personhood, to which it isn't really relevant whether people are animals or biochemical machines. If it is wrong to cause suffering, does it matter if that suffering is the result of a biochemical process, or if it is an (non-human) animal experiencing it? The ethical question is usually whether the capacity for those things are there, not why they are there. If humans happen to be the only animals with that capacity, it doesn't change those justifications.

Some take the view that humans have some divinely endowed right to use animals, which is an answer in itself, albeit arguably not a necessarily good one. Humans *are* animals, and to use a definition that excludes them is often kind of a tautological way of saying 'not human' in those kinds of arguments.

It also depends somewhat on whether by 'crime', you mean 'wrong' or 'illegal'. For the latter, the answer could be a perhaps more trivial answer of it being necessary to maintain order and social cohesion in our society.

Think about it, those same animals/biochemical machines are the ones who created the law stating that it's illegal to kill our kind. We naturally don't want to die, and if people will follow a rule, it will be put in place.

It's a crime to kill people because vegetarianism.

So it's ok to kill plants but not animals? Why the double standard!

That was just my way of saying I didn't understand how 'vegetarianism' is an answer to that question. I think I understand now. If humans can digest plants, why should they kill animals? Is that it?

Have you seen what those vegans do to the baby carrots?
5 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Saturday 6/14/14 - 10:59:37 PM EST (GMT-5)
Look, I'll explain the vegetarian thing with a syllogism.

Killing animals is wrong. People are animals. Therefore killing people is wrong.

See how it only works for vegetarians?

Because it's wrong. It's just morally wrong. And that's that.
4 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Saturday 10/25/14 - 8:06:57 PM EST (GMT-5)
The plants/animals differentiation is slightly tricky. People argue for animal rights because they observe perceived emotion (kinship and suffering, etc), and therefore infer from that they have an internal experience/sense of value. But plants just kind of exist and don't run away in peril when going to be lopped off (ie we don't/can't sympathise with their existence). But we can't just avoid all nature: it has an instrumental value to us that we can't really do without. But I do see the slippery slope. I've read up on animal ethics (a little). I should read up on plant ethics.

Because people are animals, and it is morally wrong to kill people, why is it right and usually legal to kill off animals?
4 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Sunday 10/26/14 - 9:10:20 AM EST (GMT-5)
Animals kill each other.

Try philosophizing about the sanctity of life with a hungry Bengal Tiger.
4 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Sunday 10/26/14 - 11:05:21 AM EST (GMT-5)
Not all animals do. People are responsible for sending some animals into extinction, because of things deforestation, which takes away there homes, and because we feel that we can just take some animals out of their homes, or replace them w/ new ones who have no top predators, so the other prey eventually dies out. But, I was referring to things like poaching, and murdering animals for sport, which is just plain wrong, because half aren't even eaten. It makes me sick!

Elephants cause a lot of environmental damage too.

my cat totally murders animals for sport and then doesn't eat them

So do humans...way more than elephants or any other animal.

But that's a matter of degree not a philosophical issue.

Just because one species is better at it doesn't make it more wrong.

Are lions more wrong for killing antelope than vultures who eat the left overs?
4 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Sunday 10/26/14 - 4:44:00 PM EST (GMT-5)
It's simply in a lion's nature to kill the antelope, and the lion eats it in order to survive. The vulture eats the remains to survive as well. Humans however, don't have to do all of the things that we do to survive. If we kill an animal, it should be for nutrients and to sustain life and nothing more.
