Should athletes be required to stand for the National Anthem while playing for their national team?

That really isn't true. The players have a union, and any changes to employment requirements have to be agreed upon by not just the team owners, but also the NFLPA.
This latest vote or whatever the owners did was not reviewed and approved by the PA, and will very likely be challenged.

I read this as about the NFL, especially because it got bumped recently, and the NFL owners made a recent change to the anthem policy (without consulting the players' union).

I really don't care whether they kneel or stand and cannot imagine the type of person who would get in a tizzy over such.

If the athlete wants to kneel, then kneel. If they want to stand, then stand. Why shouldn't they choose what they want to do as an individual? It makes their performance no different as a team out on the field, does it?

I don't like when people are forced into patriotism or religious stuff or anything like that. Here where I live people are VERY patriotic. Big time. I wonder how many of them do it as part of sheeple and how many are sincere? I really don't like when people become sheeple.

Yeah it's a big thing here too, along with thin blue line/blue lives matter crap. The best is when I see trucks with BOTH giant American flags and giant confederate flags. Just zero sense of irony whatsoever.

Anyway there is a Supreme Court ruling from way back that addresses "compelled patriotism" and one of the quotes from it is really good:

"If there is any fixed star in our constitutional constellation, it is that no official, high or petty, can prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion, or other matters of opinion or force citizens to confess by word or act their faith therein."

The premise of the question is that the athletes are representing their country by playing on their national team.

If one doesn't feel compelled to show respect their country by standing for the anthem, do they respect their country enough to play for the national team?

Ask whomever started the custom of standing for the Anthem. I would say that purposeful defiance of the custom is disrespectful.

I disagree. If they are going to represent the country on the playing field, they should be willing to pay respect to the national anthem of their country by standing.
