That be hard. :(

Not really.
The things I care about, they don't. And the things that upset them don't bother me.

So there's a general disconnect between me and others.

Most times.

Generally, yes.

some people i do. others i don't
like some it's too easy and even a little painful, and other times it's worrying difficult. i haven't found the rule for what flips it one way or the other, but i suspect that it's simply to do with how like me i imagine they are and is entirely narcissistic

Only with the people with which I find it easy to empathize...

In the cognitive sense of interpreting and understanding how someone feels, I think I get by okay. I don't experience their emotions in an affective sense, though. I might feel bad that someone is embarrassed, but I won't feel embarrassed for them.

I'm not sure that people generally are as good at perspective taking as they think they are, though. You're trying to build a model of someone else, but you're generally relying on a lot of your own assumptions and experiences to do it. In some contexts the assumptions might be more jarring. For example, it might be presumptuous of me to try and put myself in the position of a homeless black woman - I probably can't, and I'm better off just listening to how they talk about their experiences. Maybe we actually just take the assumptions for granted the rest of the time, though.

To some extent it's a bit like "is how I experience red the same as how you experience red"; so long as you use the right word in roughly the right context, it doesn't really matter if the experience is the same 99% of the time.

it's not extremely difficult in my case. i tend to tolerate more than what is good for me, sometimes.

I do, yes. Sometimes to a fault. I will empathize so much that I sometimes lose track of what I want and what my own feelings are.

Or I'll just get intensely emotional over someone else's distress.

Whenever someone I love is incredibly upset, I tend to get upset too. I try to keep it under control for their sake, but sometimes I end up crying with them anyway. It's not intentional, I can just really *feel* their pain. It's difficult to describe.

I didn't use to empathize with people very well

but something changed at some point
and now I feel like I'm in bb's shoes where I empathize possibly way too much with people
2 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Saturday 10/3/15 - 8:28:57 AM EST (GMT-5)
i don't have a strong enough grasp on my emotions to determine what is what and when empathy is the thing that i'm feeling.
2 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Saturday 10/3/15 - 9:33:22 AM EST (GMT-5)
though there are some exceptions to who I empathize with
2 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Saturday 10/3/15 - 12:56:52 PM EST (GMT-5)
Too easy
I want to stop
2 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Sunday 10/4/15 - 6:01:36 AM EST (GMT-5)
Yes, in some cases.

I empathize with people who are really going through difficult things.

On the other hand, I can not STAND people who exaggerate in an attempt to gain empathy, nor can I stand the people who fall for it because they want to think that they're such great people.

Absolutely. Way too easily.
