I don't because I used to be homeless and I know what it's like.
I rarely give, but once in a great while I do if the person looks desperate enough.
But it seems on YT, people talk bad about hobos alllllllll the time, and I wonder where you think they are supposed to go? They are people too, they have just as much right to be somewhere as you do.
3 yrs ago - Monday 11/17/14 - 3:54:31 PM EST (GMT-5)
they make me very uncomfortable and i avoid eye contact
but this is how i treat normal people too, so in a way i'm not being prejudiced there and am still treating them like everyone else

I'll let it slide then. THIS time.

I've been giving homeless people more money lately. Not saying that in a look at me I'm a good person way. I just gave some money one day and then the guilt for giving one person money and not the next overpowered me and so now I have to avoid walking through the city when I can't really afford to give money because I know it will make me miserable to just walk past. Also, giving money is addictive.

Anyway, no, I don't hate homeless people.

I don't think anyone does consciously. Here are some ways in which people demonstrate hate they may not even be aware of:
1. Thinking homeless people deserve it.
2. Repeating the urban legend about that homeless guy who is actually a secret millionaire off his pan-handling loot (a) so often it outnumbers *actual* homeless people in the area, (b) as a means of truncating any empathetic, compassionate discussion of the homeless, or both.
3. Contributing to conditions that lead to homelessness, like non support of veterans' services, serious mental health services, education, thoughtful prison sentencing, thoughtful drug laws, etc. Much of that is accomplished through voting and voicing that to elected officials.

4. Well, here people think the homeless are going to rob and kill you if you go near them.

I give when I can. Living in a city full of homeless people isn't easy though. To become aware of it means to watch hundreds of thousands of desperate people watching you. A lot of people look away and ignore. It's just not easy... but I try and give when I can. It's kind of heartbreaking to turn them away, because I simply can't give everyone.

But I'm surprised how much people distance themselves from another person. They're still a person, feeling things, and they've been degraded to such an extent that they have to beg to stay alive. It shocks me how much people try and layer justifications over that simple, bare truth.

I've got friends who are homeless, or formally homeless.

5. thinking poverty has only to do with lack of income.
6. thinking you can get someone out of poverty by giving them stuff.

Oh, whew! I was going to say, I wasn't sure if the homeless people I have known had filled out the official homelessness paperwork or not.

I'm not very smart and I did actually think she meant she knew people who, on paper, are homeless. As in, they don't have a fixed address, but tend to sleep at people's houses a lot or something.
3 yrs ago - Wednesday 11/19/14 - 11:29:13 AM EST (GMT-5)
Oh. I was thinking most of my homeless friends are casually homeless... blue jeans allowed and all that.
3 yrs ago - Wednesday 11/19/14 - 8:53:03 PM EST (GMT-5)
Not at all. But don't stand there holding a sign that says you're hungry and then when I offer to buy you something to eat say "No thanks." That tells me that you're saying you're hungry so people will give you money, but then you won't spend it because you're hungry, you'll spend it because you're "thirsty." In other words, you're going to take my money and go boozin' or shootin'. And that is why I don't give them money. I will go and buy them something to eat if their sign says they're hungry. I don't even ask first.

Why would I hate them?

I dislike the ones that are homeless by CHOICE, however, and are perfectly capable of getting a job.

Perhaps being homeless IS their job...

I guess I put more value in being able to care for yourself.
If you choose to be homeless and you still beg for money, then I am going to be wary of you.
I'll try not to judge, but honestly it's just - - I just don't understand why one would choose to be that way.

That sounds about like saying, "I have no problem w/ Black people... as long as they don't rob me!" to me. I really don't buy the idea that there are enough people who are homeless by choice that it even bears mentioning. It's like even mentioning them skews the proportion too far.

Okay, I understand this better. I still don't accept the "by choice" part, but I can relate to the struggling not to judge part.

i think that it's patently ridiculous to think of homeless people as lazy bums just choosing to live on the streets and beg because that's such a great lifestyle

Yeah, it is only a halfstep more ridiculous than thinking prisoners have it so good or that people on welfare are living so great on a bunch of free stuff from Obama.

I literally know people who DO choose to be homeless. I'm nto saying they're the vast majority - - but there are a couple friends of my ex who prefer it.

Like I said, they're like, probably 5% of all homeless people, but they do exist.
