Do you think children under the age of 16 should be allowed to travel alone?

Obviously from my blurb, my answer is no.

I guess it depends on the child, but generally no. At 13, I flew from Michigan to Florida. It was supposed to be a non-stop flight. Due to engine failure we had to stop in Atlanta. NOBODy helped me. I wandered around ATL trying to figure out where I was supposed to go. I asked several people, but no one helped me until I started crying.

I flew with my sister from one state to another when I was 9 and she was 11.

I used to take the city bus by myself to get home from school every day when I was around 9 or 10 years old and I never thought it was frightening or anything. I think it's a good life experience.. it teaches kids to be careful and self-sufficient. But it does depend on the child really.

No. Because they are stupid.
4 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 6/3/13 - 5:58:35 PM EST (GMT-5)
I wouldnt send my hypothetical kid alone. Im sure there are kids out there that are able to do it just fine though, and sometimes theres just no other option. Id rather a kid get on a non-stop flight alone than have to take a bunch of buses or something alone.

I wouldnt want to take that option away from them and cause them to have to do other forms of travel that much less safe.

I went off on a solo cycling holiday at 14.

It was brilliant. Why deny kids that chance?
4 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 6/3/13 - 6:05:08 PM EST (GMT-5)
it really depends on the circumstances, but for the most part, I wouldn't have a problem letting my future kid fly alone

as long as he didn't have a problem with it
4 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 6/3/13 - 6:32:48 PM EST (GMT-5)
It depends how far I guess. I mean, I started going to the town to buy games by myself when I was about 12 and never had any trouble. However, I would never send a 12 year old to another country without supervision.

You all realize there are pedophiles in the world right? A child under the age of 16 is perfect prey. That's exactly why I say no to this question, and I think that it should be clear to others as well.

I think they'd be fine on a plane journey where they're met at the other end. No problem.
4 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 6/3/13 - 10:39:00 PM EST (GMT-5)
i traveled alone at 14 to visit relatives.

Exactly my point. Not to mention the potential hijacks and the like.

Walking or biking to a store when you're a kid doesn't count. And neither does taking the city bus to and from school when your with other kids. I'm talking about REAL travel and getting on a plane or a bus unaccompanied by an adult and surrounded by nothing but strangers.
4 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 6/3/13 - 11:39:34 PM EST (GMT-5)
the terrorists sure have gotten to you

i bring my kid to the plane
and make sure someone is there to pick the kid up

as long as these two factors are in place, there's not much chance of anything happening to the kid between take off and landing

planes are safer than cars
no one is going to hijack it

When my son went to Bulgaria at age 8, Lufthansa accepted responsibility and lived up to it. The cabin crew passed him on to ground support staff in Germany who got him to and from a hotel, saw that he ate, and got him onto his connecting flight, handing him over to the cabin crew for the next leg. When he reached Bulgaria, they handed him over to his grandparents. Generally, given the choice, I now fly Lufthansa on international routes.

I did it around age 9 and I don't think I'd have a problem with my kids doing the same. The airplane/airports are about as safe and secure as an environment can be these days. If you're worried about paedophiles/terrorists, then you're much more at risk by sending him to school than on a flight.

So it's fine walking around in the open, but being locked in a metal box 30,000 feet above the ground for a few hours is too vulnerable?
4 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 6/4/13 - 10:35:51 AM EST (GMT-5)
If the plane gets hijacked, it surely doesn't matter if there's an adult there or not.
4 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 6/4/13 - 12:37:46 PM EST (GMT-5)
If you're that frightened by pedophiles then you might as well not even let your kids play outside or walk home from school. I can assure you that there are registered pedophiles in probably every neighbourhood in this country. Besides most kids that are attacked by pedophiles are attacked by someone they know.

Exactly why I would rather they travel on a plane than have to take other forms of transportation alone.

Of course its not ideal for them to travel alone ever, but sometimes there is no other way. Traveling is expensive.

Then your point is idiotic. The chances of a child being molested in a metal tube travelling at almost the speed of sound thousands of feet in the air are pretty much zero.

Unless you know something about Superman we don't.

In fact, as has already been stated, a child is far more likely to be molested by a family member or close family friend than by a stranger.

Because today's parents are paranoid morons who wrap their kids in cotton wool, protecting them from dangers that are vanishingly small but instead exposing them to the very real dangers of obesity and diabetes as they spoil their children with junk food and video games in an effort to make up for keeping them prisoner for the first 18 years of their lives.

I don't think this question is as much about age as it is maturity.

Exactly these.

My daughter started travelling on her own when she was 6. 4 our flights. We gave her things to color and a DVD Player, ect ect... she loved it.

She has since flown many more times and even has frequent flyer miles.
