Right hand. I only use my fork in my left hand when I'm cutting a piece of meat. Then I switch back.

Reversed, as I'm left-handed, but same concept, w/ the switching.
If I'm visualizing what dave's talking about, he holds both his knife and fork throughout his unblessed meal. Here in America, we more traditionally put the knife down.

Fork in left, always. I'm also left handed.

That's it. We hold our cutlery throughout our godless, sinful meals.

So do you switch hands after every forkful to cut the next?
1 yr ago, 2 mos ago - Sunday 2/26/12 - 10:31:31 AM EST (GMT-5)
I generally do all my cutting, then put the knife down and switch my fork to my dominant hand.
1 yr ago, 2 mos ago - Sunday 2/26/12 - 10:42:57 AM EST (GMT-5)
I see. That sort of makes sense. I do think I'd like it, but I can see what you mean.

Is this just in informal settings? Would it be the norm to do it your way at a formal dinner or banquet?
1 yr ago, 2 mos ago - Sunday 2/26/12 - 10:44:01 AM EST (GMT-5)
Don't think I'd like it. Not do.

My typing has gone to rat sh*t. Sunday lunch with ale doesn't help!

No, other way around. I'd say it's more formal to put down your knife while using your fork. Informally, you could do it however the present company accommodated.
I'm not sure about switching your fork hand, though. I wouldn't be surprised if somewhere out there is an antiquated rule that you *must* use your knife, in particular, but possibly fork also, in a particular hand. To avoid bumping elbows, for example, it might be traditional for everyone to use his or her right hand for the knife, since the elbow is potentially more involved. IDK... It's rare to see people keep both utensils at the ready here.
1 yr ago, 2 mos ago - Sunday 2/26/12 - 11:38:11 AM EST (GMT-5)
If I'm only using a fork it's in my right hand.
If I'm using a fork and a knife, the fork is in my left hand and the knife in my right.
1 yr ago, 2 mos ago - Sunday 2/26/12 - 1:04:03 PM EST (GMT-5)
I use my right hand.
1 yr ago, 2 mos ago - Sunday 2/26/12 - 1:04:52 PM EST (GMT-5)
Because I am left handed I always use my left hand to hold my fork unless, like IRL already stated, I am cutting something. This leads me to sit always on the corners of tables. No risk of bumping elbows.
1 yr ago, 2 mos ago - Sunday 2/26/12 - 2:44:16 PM EST (GMT-5)
I am right handed, and also hold my fork in that hand.

Though I shoot any long gun left handed.
1 yr ago, 2 mos ago - Sunday 2/26/12 - 4:13:45 PM EST (GMT-5)
Right, for the most part. But I do sometimes use my left hand when I have used my right hand to cut something
1 yr ago, 2 mos ago - Sunday 2/26/12 - 5:13:54 PM EST (GMT-5)
Right. But I can use both. My family looks at me like I'm crazy when I use my left :P

Whatever hand I pick it up in to be honest
1 yr ago, 2 mos ago - Sunday 2/26/12 - 8:15:26 PM EST (GMT-5)
Left.
1 yr ago, 2 mos ago - Sunday 2/26/12 - 8:23:56 PM EST (GMT-5)
yes, Laughie, I believe you're *supposed* to keep the fork in the left and use your knife in right as needed. but lord knows I'm not an etiquette expert.

I do believe switching hands is considered gauche.
1 yr ago, 2 mos ago - Sunday 2/26/12 - 9:27:33 PM EST (GMT-5)
I usually use my right hand unless I have a knife then I use my left.
1 yr ago, 2 mos ago - Monday 2/27/12 - 11:25:53 AM EST (GMT-5)
Right..because I'm right-handed.

Both...because I'm ambidextrous.

Depends entirely on if I'm eating something that requires a knife. In that case, the knife must be in the right hand.
