How about if he was unaware of the fact that he had a child until it was too late?
8 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 6/13/11 - 4:02:56 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'm not sure that a father should be able to absolve himself of his obligation to pay child support...

No. He has multiple options at the time of conception including several forms of birth control or simply not putting his junk anywhere he can't handle.

This. If you can't handle the consequences of sex, don't have sex.

But a woman can have an abortion without the consent of the father...how is that fair?

Didn't anyone tell you? Life isn't fair.

Her body, her choice, apparently.

No, but the law should strive to be.

I don't think changing the laws in this way would make life any more fair.

So let's get this straight - if a woman gets pregnant, she has the sole decision to terminate the pregnancy if she chooses. But if she chooses not to, the male is forced to be responsible for the child.

And you don't see any problem with that?
8 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 6/13/11 - 9:08:23 PM EST (GMT-5)
Should abortion be legal?

The reason for that is because the CHILD has no choice, but deserves to have sufficient funds available for food, clothing, and housing. By absolving the father of financial responsibility, you punish the child.

I will note that many, many fathers do not in fact pay any child support, whether that child was born out-of-wedlock or within a marriage that ended in divorce.

The mother is screwed more often than the father in this one.

"By absolving the father of financial responsibility, you punish the child. "

Is that a worse punishment than abortion?

If the father wants no part in fatherhood, and the mother can't cope on her own, there are plenty of couples looking to adopt newborn babies.

Yes, I think that it is.

Abortion is quick, and we all die eventually. Living in poverty is long, painful, and often ends in an equally violent death.

Often, the mother thinks she can support the child - she may even be able to in the early years. But things can change over 18 - 20 years. And very few want to adopt a child that is no longer an infant.
8 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 6/13/11 - 9:18:43 PM EST (GMT-5)
I wonder how people agree with that notion...would you rather be born poor or never be born at all?
8 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 6/13/11 - 9:21:04 PM EST (GMT-5)
I suspect it depends on the degree of poverty.

Poverty is analog, not digital.

And I see your new question.

Further, you put a (greater) financial incentive on having an abortion. I'm not comfortable with that.
8 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 6/13/11 - 9:23:11 PM EST (GMT-5)
Well, we are talking about being born in a developed nation, and one might argue that the poorest among us still love much better than some of the truly impoverished people in this world.

Why not? You think abortions should only be performed if the mother has decided she doesn't want the child? But if the father makes a similar decision it means nothing?
8 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 6/13/11 - 9:30:11 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'd prefer they didn't happen at all. When they do happen, I'd prefer there was a very honest conversation between both the man and the woman. But ultimately I don't think the father has any right to enforce a choice at that point.
