It has to do with the breast feeding. It burns something like 500 extra calories a day.
But from what I've noticed, that is actually rare. Aside from the freakish celebs who probably starve themselves into their old sizes, most new mothers don't actually lose all the baby weight that fast. |

Breast feeding helps a lot.
Also, after birth, a woman loses a lot of fluid weight, and the uterus shrinks quite a bit.
And of course, getting up 10 times per night uses a lot of calories. |

They seem to lose a few pounds immediately upon giving birth, too. |

Why would it at all be odd? She just shoved a foreign body out of her uterus, as well as supporting structures, and down-regulates the necessary energetic requirements. Furthermore, as noted above, she spends excess energy producing a fluid that is, again, sucked out of her body.
It would be unusual for a woman *not* to lose weight after giving birth. |

Funny, most mothers I know don't breast feed, they're too damn lazy and selfish... |

If a new mother has to return to work, it can be difficult to breast feed.
Frankly, I found whipping out a breast to be much faster and easier than warming formula and bottle feeding. |
