Put lids on your kids.

That's the message from the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA), which recently launched a new Web site to educate parents about how important it is for children to wear helmets when they're skiing.

'Wearing a helmet can help reduce the severity of a head injury under many circumstances,' says NSAA president Michael Berry. 'We recommend that parents, skiers and snowboarders educate themselves about the benefits and limitations of helmets and make an informed choice about whether to wear one or have their child wear one,' he says.

No, I think its empirical proof of Darwins theory of survival of the fittest.

Have you people been skiing anywhere other than your local bunny slope? Absolutely it should be encouraged. I don't wear a helmet if I'm going skiing with someone who's a beginner, but if I'm going with my snowboarding pals, or with a few mogul crazies I know, I slap that baby on...

Snowboarding is different, those people are crazy and should wear a helmet, LOL ... But skiing? The last three times I went skiing I never fell down once, and that was on black diamond runs. Unless you run into a tree, I don't see how a helmet would help anyone. If you fall, you fall on snow, it's not concrete :P
11 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Saturday 11/9/02 - 4:19:39 PM EST (GMT-5)
If you fall on snow at the speeds I ski at, it's an awful lot like concrete... Besides, moguls and other skiiers are pretty hard...
11 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Saturday 11/9/02 - 4:24:27 PM EST (GMT-5)
Other skiiers have about 1.5 inches of padding on them, how is that hard? The only time I crashed was when I was bombing a nice, long course, when I went over a jump, went about 15 feet into the air and landed flat on my back. I almost broke my rented skis, both my boots were almost off, my hat and goggles were up the hill, my poles were halfway down the hill, and so was my other ski. I couldn't breathe for about 50 seconds, was pretty freaky. That's what I get for going unprepared over a jump.

If you want to go skiing in my school, you'd need a helmet. But it could be because people likes throwing snowballs with stones in on each other.
11 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 1/18/03 - 10:22:41 PM EST (GMT-5)
I go cross country skiing and never even considered a helmet.

Ask Sonny Bono ... Oppps my bad he hit a tree and died, I'm sure it will be the law someday just like motorcycles, skateboards and bikes.
11 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 1/18/03 - 11:01:06 PM EST (GMT-5)
it isn't the law for skateboards and bikes...
11 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 1/18/03 - 11:01:48 PM EST (GMT-5)
I don't get it, unless it isn't for motorcycles either...

It is here in Cali, Mallet
11 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 1/18/03 - 11:04:13 PM EST (GMT-5)
wow, Cali suxxors, then...
11 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 1/18/03 - 11:06:56 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yup, tell me about it, all motrocycle riders, all people under age 16 for bikes and some counties are asking for skateboarding as well but sooner or later it will go US wide.
11 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 1/18/03 - 11:09:46 PM EST (GMT-5)
I can understand it being encouraged, but enforced??? geez... I would think it only should if its a passenger on a motorcycle under 16 or something... Does the skateboarding and biking apply to skate and bike parks, or just streets?
11 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 1/18/03 - 11:12:03 PM EST (GMT-5)
Bikes are everywhere aged 16 and under, skateboarding is in parks for now but that will change.
11 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 1/18/03 - 11:15:03 PM EST (GMT-5)
so the skateboarding is in parks but not on streets? if anything, wouldn't it be the other way around? Wow, they take a crazy idea and make it even crazier...
11 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 1/18/03 - 11:20:49 PM EST (GMT-5)
Cant cover all the streets but you can cover the parks besides most parks have insurance that requires it but some cops do hand out tix for it if they want.
11 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Sunday 2/9/03 - 9:33:58 PM EST (GMT-5)
Snow hurts.
11 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Friday 2/14/03 - 8:00:43 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think so... I was unconcious for a long time from a snowboarding fall, and my friend was comatose for 6 months from a skiing fall on a small area in Michigan.
9 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Sunday 7/10/05 - 12:33:07 PM EST (GMT-5)
How about racers, eh? I think many of us would be dead without helmets. Might I add that wearing skin tight, paper-thin racing suits are not the best protection when you're flying down the mountain at absolute top speeds.

What If Sledding Helmets Were The Law?
5 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Tuesday 2/3/09 - 1:29:17 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yes. YES!

I'm in this ski/snowboard club where we go on trips about 4 times a year. One of my friends constantly complained about the rule where everyone *must* wear a helmet.

On the second day of the trip, he smashed into a tree and literally broke it WITH HIS HEAD... and then hit *another* tree with his head.

But nevermind that, HELMETS ARE UNCOOL AND LOOK STUPID.

I wish I had been wearing a helmet the last time I went skiing.
