If no one buys a ticket to a certain showing of a movie, does the cinema still run the movie?
I`ve always wondered about this. It`s kind of like that question ``If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it still make a sound?``. I wondered this ever since a friend and I went to a movie during the day on a day off from school and none of the other schools were off and then most adults were at work. We were the only two people there. So I always wondered if a movie automatically ran whether anyone bought a ticket or not.

And yes, it was when we went to see Big that my friend and I were the only two there. And if we'd gone on the weekend when more people go to the movies, I wouldn't have been surprised if that still happened. That movie was kind of stupid. Loved the shimmee-shimmee song, though!

And when I saw Home this weekend, it looked like my friend and I were going to be the only ones but a few more came in. Not many, though. I don't think there were more than maybe 10 people there. Probably not even that.

Yes, I went to an animated movie! I like Jim Parsons, OK?

The cinema is contractually required to show a certain amount of showings of each film. unless there is a technical fault, they will play the film.

The same with adverts, they have to show some on each showing, however they have to play the full amount on the last showing of the day.

The cinema i used to work at did anyway.

Most start them, viewers or not, in case they sell tickets late so they're not backing up the next viewing.

I've heard stories of people who were sitting in their seats, waiting for the movie to start, and management came to them and refunded their ticket price plus some passes b/c they were not going to run the movie w/ so few people there.

During university I worked at an arts centre (lots of pretentious art house films..... It was awesome)

If no one bought a ticket or walked in within 10 minutes they would cancel the showing..... normally there was at least one customer to save the day

(also, empty cinemas are the best!)

Yes, they definitely are!

Even if no one buys a ticket for the movie, the cinema still has to show the movie for set number of times.

I was a projectionist for several chains. Yes, thy'll run it anyway in the event there are latecomers. And once it's started, most systems are difficult to shut down. Now with digital systems, it would be easy.
