Today I was looking at what foreigners feel is weird about Americans, and being incredibly loud is like the top one!... and low toilets... and fries and chips being two different things... giant trucks and SUVs *cough, cough Texas*... and too sweet of bread (which I'm really not sure on that one). And now that I think about it, America IS loud... and our bread is sorta sweet. Ask yourself, which is sweeter, something like an Italian roll, or a hamburger bun.

How the rest of the world views America is how Americans view texas

What about the whole 'everything's bigger in Texas' thing??? Doesn't apply to the small, low toilets. but, a lot of the foreigners went on and on about the huge portions! XD

This is so painfully accurate.

White Bread has a ton of sugar, hence it's sweeter than whole grain or rye, it's also terrible for you.
A lot of countries learn their English from UK Television, hence Chips being referred to as Crisps and fries being Chips.
Truck wise, that just comes from how America used to be mostly manual labor, IMHO.
Toilet wise I have no idea. Do they use Bidets? Aren't those things huge?

I felt like bread in Japan was sweeter than in America.
Like, the white bread was sweeter than the white bread in America.

For me, it's because I can't hear worth a sh*t.

Might as well ask why Europeans stand so close.
3 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Thursday 5/29/14 - 8:40:34 PM EST (GMT-5)
It's just a cultural difference.

My dad was nearly deaf, so that's why I'm loud.
3 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Friday 5/30/14 - 8:27:56 PM EST (GMT-5)
i'm italian
so that's why i'm loud

you have to be or you won't get heard in a family as large as mine

Yeah, this is also probably part of the reason for me too.

Don't pass it off on all of us Americans! Texas is like a whole different planet! And I've never seen a gun but I met someone from Europe and she said we are overly friendly. R we?

Americans believe in quantity not quality, it really shows. Also there is a bigger focus on masculinity.

More exclamation marks would have helped emphasize your point better. But I think your meaning is clear.

Where in Italy were you born?
3 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 6/4/14 - 11:19:28 AM EST (GMT-5)
one has to be born in a certain place to be culturally and genetically of that place?
3 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 6/4/14 - 1:59:43 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yep, it all depends on where your mother was when you popped out of her vajayjay.

it's interesting how the perception of where you're from varies depending on where you're from

i've noticed that americans in general seem to think of it as where your ancestors are from. whereas europeans generally go more with where you were born and raised
3 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 6/4/14 - 2:09:04 PM EST (GMT-5)
that's probably because european's ancestors are from the same place as them

for the most part
3 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 6/4/14 - 2:17:00 PM EST (GMT-5)
i don't think that's entirely it. i mean there's plenty of cross fertilisation from different countries the world over. most people have ancestors from different countries if you go back far enough
it's a very specific american thing you see, you'd never see someone born and raised in england with french grandparents call themselves french or whatever, and with americans sometimes the actual people from that country are further generations back than that

i'm not having a go, it's just interesting to me. were your parents originally from italy? or if not, which generation were?
3 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 6/4/14 - 2:30:41 PM EST (GMT-5)
i know you aren't having a go

not parents
grandparents

i think non-americans don't really understand what it means when someone from america says they are italian or french or chinese or indian

it's about where your ancestors came from
it's about what cultural aspects, other than american, affect you the most
it's about where you get your particular look from

when i say i'm italian in the sense of this question, i'm making a play at the large, loud italian family stereotype

if it were to talk about where i come from or where i live specifically, i'd say i'm american
if it's asking about where my family comes from, i'd say italy

We know, it's a really annoying habit your countrymen have. Especially since you tend to assert your (insert European country here) heritage by laying claim to tired stereotypes of behaviour and appearance.

My grandparents were Irish. This does NOT make ME Irish. I've never even BEEN to Ireland.

I can see why you're ashamed of being Irish. You're lucky you're in Scotland where you can get away with denying it.
