Well, I'm assuming the star is part of the blue.
4 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Wednesday 8/28/13 - 1:36:54 PM EST (GMT-5)

well, I would disagree with it anyway

culturally I'd call all the blue part, except for the northern part, west
the northern part is midwest
the part east of blue is south

though parts of north white, I'd consider midwest
like everything north of dallas
and then carry that line east about halfway to the La border

Take all of Texas and Oklahoma and call it "Hot, Dry, and Nasty."

Yes, but Arizona, New Mexico and half of California are obviously on the western side of the country while Texas is in the middle, neither east nor west.

south carolina and georgia are obviously on the east side, but are considered southern
4 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Thursday 8/29/13 - 12:26:30 AM EST (GMT-5)
I consider it Southern.

Yes, but it's further west than those states we refer to as the Midwest.

kind of southwest, kind of southern
is how I've always thought of it

I've never thought of it as being west.
Only southwest. The south has to be attached there.

In terms of culture Texas seems more influenced by the mid west and south west than the that which we'd culturally call Southern. The only truly Southern tradition that Texans seem to abide is wearing too much clothing despite the fact that it's blisteringly hit out.

Food and drink wise, Texas tends to draw more of a Spanish influence than one steeped in the style of the Southern US. I couldn't see a drink like a mint Julip or even a gin or bourbon Rickey being popular in Texas because the climate doesn't fit right for those drinks.

Finally, Texas sm doesn't have a very pronounced black culture. The south does, and as we all know: The South - black people = The Midwest.

I think the more important question is 'Is Texas in the 20th century yet?'

4 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Thursday 8/29/13 - 8:07:20 AM EST (GMT-5)
Texas in in the south west, but more south
4 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Thursday 8/29/13 - 12:25:16 PM EST (GMT-5)
Actually, Texas is influenced more by its German heritage than Spanish. It is more like German with heavy Spanish influences.

Where do you think all that red meat as basis of the dish comes from?
4 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Thursday 8/29/13 - 6:05:28 PM EST (GMT-5)
German is a major contributor to cuisine and culture across the US though. Check out Pennsylvania, for instance. What makes the South West so different is that strong Latin influence. If we were talking about what makes Texan cuisine different from Mexican cuisine, yeah German is the difference maker.
4 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Thursday 8/29/13 - 6:07:55 PM EST (GMT-5)
i think whatever influence german culture has on texan cuisine is far outweighed by the influence mexican culture has on texas as a whole

The real problem with Texas isn't the bastardized definition of BBQ or the Mexican influence on culture. It's the Dallas Cowboys fans. With their walking and their talking and stuff. Also, the Rangers can suck it and the Rockets. The Spurs are okay I guess... Well they would be if they weren't in Texas.

LOL! Same with me.

I dunno. How about southwest? Mid-south since it's so close to the middle?
4 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Tuesday 9/24/13 - 10:51:07 PM EST (GMT-5)
But according to Wiki, it's just considered south.
