Do you think we rely too much on calculators to do math these days?

I do.

I know that I do. I have always been horrible at math. Anything beyond using whole numbers has always confused me. Fractions and percentages, etc I must use a calculator. I am not ashamed to admit this. Some people are just really not good with numbers and I am one of them.

yeah because i suck at math
8 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Wednesday 5/2/12 - 10:21:42 PM EST (GMT-5)
I have one in my desk drawer, but barely use it. Faster to do it on the computer.
8 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Wednesday 5/2/12 - 10:39:12 PM EST (GMT-5)
I sure do. I can no longer subtract two digit numbers in my head if I have to carry a 1.

I used a slide rule for my quantitative analysis final. My fellow students had never seen one before. I finished first and got one of the better grades. A lot of them started pressing keys on their calculator before they realized what it was they were supposed to calculate.

I think people do rely on them too much. I try as hard as I can to work everything out on paper or in my head before using one. It feels like cheating, even if it is just a minor thing.
8 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Thursday 5/3/12 - 11:39:16 PM EST (GMT-5)
I do.

Certainly. Cash registers dont requite you to count anymore. But to be honest I dont see the big deal. As long as you know how to subtract and add, I think calculators make things a lot quicker and more correct.

And yet they still get my change wrong...

These days? It's been going on for years

High level math cannot be done with a calculator, computer programs are better for doing calculations that require a lot of calculation or set up.
8 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Tuesday 5/8/12 - 11:08:42 AM EST (GMT-5)
i have a really advanced calculator. i call it dad.
8 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Saturday 5/19/12 - 7:44:40 AM EST (GMT-5)
Calculators were meant for a reason, and I say we use them!
8 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Thursday 5/24/12 - 4:20:28 PM EST (GMT-5)
I use them when I'm stuck on a problem. (yes, you should ask the teacher but I only tell the teacher if it's a problem I can't do on the caculuater) I do know a few people that are smarter than me and use caculuaters to help them when they aren't supposed to.
Everyone has done it once or more.
8 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Thursday 5/24/12 - 11:58:07 PM EST (GMT-5)
I know I use calcutalors too much.
8 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Friday 5/25/12 - 12:07:20 AM EST (GMT-5)
The sad part is that most students can barely use their calculators to do basic functions, let alone all the complex functions they are capable of .
8 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Friday 5/25/12 - 1:05:03 AM EST (GMT-5)
Yes. Just like the abaci before us.
8 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Friday 5/25/12 - 1:19:55 AM EST (GMT-5)
There will always be great mathematicians, I don't think calculators are going to change that.

Some people are just mathematically inclined, and the existence of calculators and computers only enhances their ability to solve problems.

Actually, my HP48 does quite a lot of algebra, even some calculus.

Isn't that like asking if we're relying on measuring cups in cooking too much?

No. To give an example, if called upon to quadruple a recipe, most of my 9th grade students would need to get out a calculator to multiply every thing by 4 (indeed, many would need one to subtract 3 from 5). On the other hand, when performing the recipe, pretty much all off us would need a measuring device to measure out the ingredients to make sure we were keeping them in the right proportion.

People should be able to do simple math because it allows them to perform other tasks (especially higher maths) more quickly and efficiently. What really scares me is that so many basic functions are being lost, that we are quickly getting to the point where we could not re-invent much of what we have.

And yeah: my TI 98 does indefinite integrals and derivatives, as well as being able to solve algebraic functions (you don't even have to enter them any particular way, just plug in the equation in any form, tell it to solve for a particular variable). I used it to solve 5th power equations when in analytical chemistry and it performed wonderfully. It would have taken me 20 minutes or more to work out the roots by hand.

Math is terrible. I want to know who invented math so I can punch him/her.

I don't think calculators are the problem. Calculators do the numbers faster, but they don't do the thinking for you. If there's a problem (and there is) it has more to do w/ the deterioration of problem-solving skills. Considering the amount of standardized high-stakes testing in school these days, I know we're not shorting kids on basic math skills. However, if those high-stakes tests are the only application we're introducing them to and the depth of thinking isn't pushed beyond a timed multiple choice test, it's no wonder what is seen in the world beyond school is someone looking frozen in fear when you give him or her $5.11 for a $4.86 bill.
