IMHO, the media, their reporters, anchorpeople, the people at the desk, they all have their agenda.
And they all tend to have the same agenda. If you're a conservative, you're more likely to apply for a job at Fox than at CNN, and vice versa.
One channel's terrorists are another's freedom fighters.

No.

I recognize that as humans we can never reach absolute impartiality because even "facts" are filtered through our subjective consciousness, but just because we can't deal in absolutes doesn't mean we can't strive for some degree of objectivity.

So yes, I think that the news could be fair and balanced, they just aren't.

Balanced, maybe, fair, no way.

There's a big range between 'fair and balanced' and absolute propaganda.

The evening after the Bush invasion of Iraq Aldod and I went to downtown San Jose to see who was protesting. A fair crowd had gathered in a park, but the Fox reporter we drove by was about three blocks away (where he would have seen the crowd) filming his segment with a lone girl waving a HUGE PALESTINIAN FLAG in the background.

It was such repulsive bullpoo, we should have stopped and called him on it on the spot really.

"Bush invasion of Iraq "

Here I was thinking the US invaded Iraq. Talk about spin.

I think the more you claim to be "fair and balanced" or other such terms that you use to mean the same, the less you actually are any of those things.

I actually think it's possible, or at least more fair and balanced than it is in the U.S. When you watch other news media, like British news for example, you see issues covered with much more depth and there's no clear agenda. In the U.S., not only is our news often unbalanced, but it is filled with so much fluff that is pretty much all human interest stories that it's hard to call most of it meaningful news to begin with.

Well said.

Balanced and fair matters to one's perspective. My view of fair could be different than Bill Oreilly or Jon Stewart

Yeah some are just trying to tell the story. Not from any persons view. Although they always cause drama too.

No

Haha no, that's not what they want. The media is trying to control us by making us believe what they show us...they never show the full story, hence, lie to us. They show us only bits and pieces and tweek it to make it seem more harsh than it really is. Never rely on the media for information...or at least not your sole source for information.

I don't know, but I do know that of one feels the need to advertise that way, they have an agenda.

I've noticed as well that in the US, covering all stories in the format of "Controversy! Side 1 followed by Side 2!" is considered neutrality, when really it's just the illusion of neutrality.

I think we have to accept that not all stories have two sides. Some are pretty clearly one-sided... and others can have a lot more than just two sides.
