Just out of curiosity, why should or would they be prohibited?

My mom was working for a doctor when those sorts of commercials first started to come out, and her boss was furious because tons of patients started coming in asking for drugs they had seen advertised on television, having convinced themselves that they had the symptoms the medicines could treat. Just a bit of anecdotal evidence there.

Because they are used to sell drugs to people who don't need them, to market drugs that are inferior to others available, and to keep the prices of drugs high. There is no up side to the ads.

That's the same as all advertisement. Is it any different to advertising inferior food products?

Depends on whatever is it they're pushing. Over the counter meds, vitamin pills, 'alternative' medicines, etc. are fine as long as they work within the rules of the broadcasting commission and the ASA.

Prescription drugs should never be advertised to the general public.

No because even if the general public cant get the drugs without a prescription, then how would they ever know without commercials and other forms of advertising to ask their doctors about it ?

My grandma saw an ad that actually caused her to go to the doctors and now she is much happier because she is no longer in pain. So, sometimes it helps people recognize that they do have an issue and it could be taken care of.

People dont like going to the doctors, especially older people, so they dont know they could be living a lot easier.

However, the most annoying ads are the ones for depression, which I wouldnt really apply to the old folks crowd. Those ads can gtfo.

A lot of elderly people take antidepressants, actually.

And yes, I wish they'd yank those ads off the air; that's why you go to a doctor.
