I only go to the games for the fights. That's why I prefer minor league games to major league ones: better fights.

Fighting has it's place. I don't necessarily agree with fighting for the sake of it, but to protect your team or star players, damn right it has a place.

If anything, there should be more fights in hockey.

Exactly... I hate when players fight just because, but it is a very needed part of the game. Players need to police themselves so that a mutual respect is in place.

There's a purpose to the fighting?
I always though it was for the audience.

This isn't f*cking Championship wrestling.
Hockey is a very respectable sport that doesn't do crap for sh*ts and giggles.
Sorry, not angry at you. Just at the fact that such opinion exists.

I know it's not championship wrestling. It's on ice. I don't think they'd have championship wrestling on ice. They'd be too cold in their spandex.

I watched Slapshot today, I'm probably biased. I'll come back and comment some other time.

The purpose of fighting in hockey is to keep players in line and respectful of eachother.
It's like a pack of wolves, if a young'un gets out of place the alpha will straighten it out quick.
If a player takes a cheep shot at someone and the gets the sh*t beaten out of him, he'll think twice about playing dirty like that the next time.

And fighting is the only way to accomplish that?
I mean I don't really care that there are fights in hockey, but I have to think that they exist because of some kind of tradition rather than necessity.

If you let it be controlled because of just penalties players will deviate more and more because a penalty is nowhere near as bad of a consequence as pain.
It's like if you ever watch junior players have to wear full face cages. The sticks start to come up, not necessarily intentionally but because the consequence of pain is gone. It doesn't matter that they're getting penalized for high-sticking.

Other sports do fine without fighting.

That sounds a little juvenile, but what I'm trying to say is that I don't see why hockey should be different from other sports. Or even outside of sports people don't need the threat of pain to behave.
I think that fighting in hockey is so commonplace that players are convinced it is necessary.

It's something that has been with the sport for years. Banning it now would hardly gain anything, methinks, except for - as mentioned - more penalties and dirty plays.
Leave it be. The players know what they're getting into. If they want to play hockey without the hitting, play roller-hockey.

They do here. I don't watch the NHL; I mainly just go (or, used to go, actually) to the local games around here. I don't know much about hockey, but I know that I like to see the fights.
