variation that fits the environment better like those moths seems pretty much fact. That humans came from fish-type ancestors and apelike ancestors is more like a good theory.

i dont beleive in evolution for two reason, one im catholic and i know that god made humans and everything else and two. if we came from evolution then why are those animals still around?

The Roman Catholic Church has accepted evolution as a scientific fact and reasonable explanation of how modern humans arrived. Evolution answers the how, God can answer the why.

As for your other question, just study evolution some.

Those animals are still around because evelution doesn't mean all of a sudden poof all fish turn to frogs. Only the offspring of two animals change and not by much either.

*evolution

you should definitely read up a bit more before you embarass all the other Catholics

I think it's a theory. There seems to be some truth to it, but I think the scientists have some kinks to work out. Have you heard the new aquatic ape theory? It's insane.
12 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 1/27/08 - 1:39:50 PM EST (GMT-5)
I don't take it as scientific fact at all, only as a theory.

I personally do not believe in evolution.
12 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 1/27/08 - 1:42:45 PM EST (GMT-5)
Haha, trick question, they are both the same thing. The theory of evolution is a scientific fact, or rather a massive body of facts coming together to form an explanation(theory). Nice try though.

Beat me to it.

Evolution is right up there with the Earth revolving around the sun. Both scientific theories. No matter how much evidence supports them, they will always be theories.
12 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 1/27/08 - 2:28:30 PM EST (GMT-5)
I see it as a theory, even though I don't believe in it.
12 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 1/27/08 - 2:31:28 PM EST (GMT-5)
Evolution is both theory and fact.

Also, I get the feeling that most of the creationists here who're blabbing about the fact that "it's ONLY a theory" don't understand what the word "theory" means in a scientific context.
Newsflash: The "theory" of evolution isn't the same thing as my "theory" about whether or not my favorite coffee shop will be serving falafel today.
12 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 1/27/08 - 2:41:30 PM EST (GMT-5)
You know, almost not a day goes by that I don't thank my high school Biology teacher for this brilliant, but short, 5 minute lecture she gave us about what it means for something to be a scientific theory, ever since that day I've caught thousands of retards trying to attack evolution from that point of ignorance.
12 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 1/27/08 - 2:43:11 PM EST (GMT-5)
I know it's a theory, but that doesn't stop it making a hell of a lot more sense than any other theory, especially the one where we all just appeared one day by magic.
12 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 1/27/08 - 2:49:59 PM EST (GMT-5)
As a scientist, I have never heard of anything being a "scientific fact." This question is idiotic. Something is a postulate, and if enough supporting data is amassed it becomes a THEORY. There is no more... The word "fact" has never, and will never appear in any scholarly work.
12 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 1/27/08 - 3:23:25 PM EST (GMT-5)
^ The only way I would think it would be used was to refer to a specific observable event. i.e. an apple a given situation falls down (fact) which is explained by the framework and principles of gravitation (theory). I don't recall seeing it used in that way in anything I've read lately, but I wouldn't think it too odd if it were. Wouldn't need validating by the "scientific" part though.

To use it as opposed to "theory" in this sense isn't appropriate though.

okay, I'll give those of you that just don't know an explanation that evolutionists have given to that argument: It's quit simple actually, we didn't come from fish that still exist today, but from a common ancestor that doesn't exist today.

it's actually a very weak argument. but don't worry, there r better ones.
12 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 1/27/08 - 9:16:39 PM EST (GMT-5)
Doesn't matter what I think, it's still a theory. But I believe in it being a theory.
12 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 1/28/08 - 4:17:11 PM EST (GMT-5)
Trips got to my point first. A theory, in science, does not equal something some guy thought up on the toilet. That's a hypothesis. Furthermore, the terms fact and theory are not successive acknowledgements of how much proof a hypothesis has.

A theory is a model which explains the observations we have gathered. In evolution's case, it's our observation of DNA, fossils, and lots of other things. These facts are best explained by the theory that we (and every living thing out there) has evolved from some earlier lifeform(s).

So to answer the question, I accept evolution as a theory and as a fact. We have the theory which has proven itself true; we have witnessed evolution.
12 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 1/28/08 - 4:28:55 PM EST (GMT-5)
I consider it a theory.

No one really knows, so it can't be a fact.
12 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 1/29/08 - 5:42:56 PM EST (GMT-5)
it is a theory because it isn't proven. there are gaps in the fossil record.
Besides, is this referring to vertical or horizontal evolution?

It's a theory because it *is* proven.
12 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 1/29/08 - 6:59:42 PM EST (GMT-5)
Evolution is true. And I can't help but giggle at all the people who are saying it's 'just a theory'.
12 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 1/30/08 - 12:09:31 PM EST (GMT-5)
Who ever asked this was just looking for a reaction.
12 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 2/12/08 - 3:08:46 PM EST (GMT-5)
I don't accept any scientific 'fact' as 100% true.
