Ale - made with a top fermenting yeast, ales are described as hearty, robust, and fruity. Bitter - a mainstay in English pubs, this golden-brown draft ale is top-fermented, hoppy, dry, and lightly carbonated. Lager - made with a bottom fermenting yeast, lagers are characteristically smooth, elegant, crisp, and clean. Comparable to pilsener. Stout - typically dark, heavy, and richly flavored, stout is top-fermented beer made from pale malt, roasted unmalted barley, and often caramel malt.

I think neon did a pretty good job. But, bottom fermenting lagers are also typically german, or derived from a german style of brewing, they are literally 'lagered' (cellared) for a few extra months at cooler temperatures. I wouldn't say that a lager and a pilsner are comperable though. The top-fermenting ales are usually fermented at a slightly higher temperature, the yeast strains and flavors can usually tolerate a bit more in the way of temperature fluctuations without producing off tastes and they don't take nearly so long to ferment. Usually. Of course, there are many different kinds of ales, some of which age quite nicely.

I was going to say the bottom vs. top yeast thing that the happily departed neon mentioned. I knew about that, but not about the various temperature stuff. I used to be somewhat of a beer snob who hated lagers, but my wallet has made me rethink that, and there are actually a lot of high quality lagers out there.
