influential writer during the age of enlightenment, Morgue... I recommend you look him up... I think the situation in Europe would have eventually produced an equally inspirational activist... if his turned out not to be Voltaire, that's irrelevant...

The French revolution? Voltaire died before it took place...

And, while he was influential, I don't think he did that much... there were other philosophers who did a lot more in my book. Locke, Montesque, Hobbes, Rousseau, even Plato, Augustine, Machiavelli, and Aristotle.

I'm not too surprised people don't know about Voltaire; high schools (at least mine) don't really teach much about philosophy, and Voltaire's works are being taught less in upper schools too. I'm a philosophy major, and none of my classes have even mentioned Voltaire, because his work isnt really rigorous philosophy; he's mainly of interest in intellectual history and political theory.

I agree, I am studying political theory and I have never had him assigned or even mentioned (except brief mentions to Candide) in any of my classes.

Wellll, everyone [important like] who existed before the time now had an effect on how America turned out, so if Voltaire just stopped existing or never existed, I'm sure we'd have some change.
