where would he go?
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 6/8/02 - 10:19:07 AM EST (GMT-5)
God's not a living thing, he can't die.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 6/8/02 - 10:19:59 AM EST (GMT-5)
If he did, would it be deicide?
17 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Saturday 8/24/02 - 12:44:14 AM EST (GMT-5)
S/he can't "die" because God is not a physical being. Spirits, technically, are not alive in the first place. At least that's what I think. Or maybe they're all alive and we are just in a physical limbo-land as punishment. I wonder what we did...
17 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Saturday 8/24/02 - 12:45:54 AM EST (GMT-5)
Probably. God can do whatever God wants.
17 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Saturday 8/24/02 - 12:47:55 AM EST (GMT-5)
God could be a manic depressive if he wanted to.
17 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Saturday 8/24/02 - 1:52:56 PM EST (GMT-5)
Bet he does that when he gets bored.
17 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Saturday 8/24/02 - 1:53:25 PM EST (GMT-5)
No. That's what youthink is for, Ana.
17 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Saturday 8/24/02 - 1:56:05 PM EST (GMT-5)
I would help him if he wanted to.
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 8/11/03 - 8:25:01 PM EST (GMT-5)
ok then, lets reword it; could he cease to exist if he chose it?
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 8/11/03 - 8:30:10 PM EST (GMT-5)
thats a funny one. Best religious uestion ive seen in a while :P
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 8/11/03 - 8:30:44 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yeah..sometimes you wonder...
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 8/11/03 - 8:32:47 PM EST (GMT-5)
No, He could not, as all existance is God. It remains a logical problem.
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 8/11/03 - 9:22:38 PM EST (GMT-5)
If God died and noone was around around to see him die, would he make a sound?
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 8/11/03 - 9:24:52 PM EST (GMT-5)
Okay, I've had this argument before. Technically, he has commited suicide. God is omniscient, and knew of his own death and pursue the actions to insure that death through Jesus being sacrificed. I've heard several counter arguments, non of which convinced me otherwise.
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 8/11/03 - 9:33:31 PM EST (GMT-5)
Suicide is killing yourself, not setting yourself up to be killed by someone else. But that is an odd thought. I never really thought about it like that.
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 8/11/03 - 9:40:43 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yes, I'm aware of the definition for suicide. Technically, when one falls off a building, they didn't kill themselves the speed at which they hit the concrete did. You always need the help of others to commit suicide. Whether it is as minute as allowing the person to be around knives and/or killing you for the sake of martrydom.
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Tuesday 8/12/03 - 1:01:30 AM EST (GMT-5)
thats like saying that it's impossible for people to kill themselves; taking things a a bit too 'technically'. I'm sure an omnipotent being could shut down their own 'awareness' for eternity if they truly desired it. Heck why couldn't they simply destroy all existence including themselves if they chose it, is it impossible to have 'nothing?'
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Tuesday 8/12/03 - 2:18:03 AM EST (GMT-5)
Jesus and God were not exactly the same, veraaumer. That's all the argument needed to show you're wrong, and don't blame my explanation for your incredulity. No, He couldn't/wouldn't, but He has allowed people room to believe it is true if they so choose.
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Tuesday 8/12/03 - 4:42:13 AM EST (GMT-5)
i get the 'wouldn't' but why the 'couldn't?'
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Tuesday 8/12/03 - 4:53:40 AM EST (GMT-5)
He could not, because he is in no way contingent on causal processes, by definition as an omnipotent being. For this reason he could neither be caused into existence nor cease to exist - even by his own means - as this would be logically impossible. V, on that reading nothing causes anything. I would say suicide is a self-caused self-death, because it arises from actions within an individual's region of action. A reality containing nothing is still a reality, glenn.
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Tuesday 8/12/03 - 4:55:08 AM EST (GMT-5)
(that, of course, assumes God's status as a temporally eternal, as opposed to a timelessly eternal God; in the latter, coming to, and ceasing to, exist are meaningless)
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Tuesday 8/12/03 - 4:59:33 AM EST (GMT-5)
Its a bit of a paradox because if God is supposed to be omnipotent, surely that means he could, by definition.
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Tuesday 8/12/03 - 5:02:59 AM EST (GMT-5)
assuming that he is capable of doing anything what's to stop him changing the entire universe and himself into nothing? would he be capable of giving up his power and becoming 100% human?
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Tuesday 8/12/03 - 5:11:16 AM EST (GMT-5)
That would be ceasing to exist, glenn. Second point, I personally do not think so. ed, omnipotence does not confer the ability to do what is logically impossible, and it is logically impossible for an omnipotent (perfect) being to cease to exist. Therefore, no paradox.
