If it turned out that the lead singer of your favourite band was a child molester, would you continue to listen to their music?

Probably not just on principle. Same reason I don't watch Roman Polanski films.

I find it easy to separate the music from the musician

now, I wouldn't buy anything new they made
but I already have several Michael Jackson albums, and whether he did unsavory things or not, those albums are still great

he is kinda a bad example though because he was never found guilty and he wouldn't profit from my money anyway
but still

imagine it is your current favourite band please
3 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Wednesday 11/27/13 - 4:25:18 PM EST (GMT-5)
and share who that is if you feel like it
3 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Wednesday 11/27/13 - 4:48:57 PM EST (GMT-5)
okay, if Kanye was putted as a child molester, I would still listen to all the albums I already own

I probably wouldn't buy any future albums from him

I only care about their music.
3 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Wednesday 11/27/13 - 5:53:05 PM EST (GMT-5)
I found out that one of my favorite singers beats women.. I still listen to him.

Yes I'm talking about Chris Brown

Bands are a tricky thing. If it was just one member, I wouldn't want to abandon the rest of the band.
For a solo artist, like Chris Brown, I won't buy any of his stuff, as I don't want to support him, but I still listen to some songs I already had.

I find it harder to separate the artist from the art. I doubt I could continue to enjoy someone's stuff knowing they're like that.
3 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Wednesday 11/27/13 - 10:32:00 PM EST (GMT-5)
No. The sound of that persons voice would disgust me. I try to avoid triggers that cause me bad thoughts and emotional distress.
3 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Wednesday 11/27/13 - 10:52:51 PM EST (GMT-5)
I would stop listening to any music produced after the rest of the band found out about their activities.

This.

There are TV series I don't watch for much the same reason. Fox's new series for example.

If Thom Yorke were a child molester, I'd just go jump off a cliff.

I can, at times, separate artists from art. I've liked the work of questionable film directors, for example...but I guess it helps that, when you have a film, there are SO MANY people working on it. It becomes a lot more than the work of one person.

At times, music can be the same way. But with Thom Yorke it'd be really really difficult to find out something like that.

and yet
I'd probably still listen, at least to the old stuff. It'd be kind of like what disappears says...I wouldn't buy anything new (assuming anything new could be released) but the older music would still mean what it meant. Plus, he wasn't the only person making the music.

BUT I WOULD STILL WANT TO JUMP OFF OF A CLIFF.

See, and this is what I meant by questionable directors (and there are more). Polanski did one of my favorite films of all time.

i probably would take the same route as disappears, i wouldn't buy any new stuff. i don't think any of my favorite artists would do something terrible like child molestation anyway.

True, there are a ton of people involved, but a film more "belongs" to a director than any other individual involved in that film by far.

But compared to many other forms of art it's tons more collaborative.
3 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Sunday 12/1/13 - 5:42:14 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yes but I wouldn't listen to their music as much knowing that.
3 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Sunday 12/1/13 - 6:02:52 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'm not sure. Norwegian author Knut Hamsun was a member of the nazi party during WWII, but he was a nobel prize winner in literature, and his works still part of the curriculum in our schools, and he's up there with Henrik Ibsen.

As long as artists personal life don't interfere with their work, I'm OK with it.

On the other hand, Morrisey said in consert that the Norwegian terrorist attack 7/22 when 70+ kids were killed by Christian extremist Anders Behring Breivik was "nothing compared to what goes on at McDonald's every day".

THAT's mixing up your roles, and I won't buy any more songs from Morrisey!!!

this is an impossibility

Maybe he just goes to a really really rough McDonalds?
3 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Sunday 12/1/13 - 8:02:45 PM EST (GMT-5)
Gosh, 99% of what I listen to is from bands that don't produce anymore.

and I have to say...I'd still listen to the music and probably not care.

3 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Sunday 12/1/13 - 9:57:21 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yeah, probably.
3 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Tuesday 12/3/13 - 5:30:26 AM EST (GMT-5)
I would listen to the old stuff because the pleasure I get from 3 minutes of music is more important than the lifetime of pain and mental anguish that some kid I've never met is going to go through.
