19th. Railroads and while there wouldn't be a good method of communication to replace the internets... there would be the telephone later on and the telegraph was around

The Victorian Era. That's the 19th century, isn't it?

Neither.

They were both horrible, primitive times without even so much as an antibiotic.

19th. I know and appreciate the stuff that happened in there more. Probably mainly due to Dickens and some Darwin. I would however like to be very far away from Victorian society. So I'd like to be some foreigner who just observes Victorian society (cos I've read so much about it I'd like to see it) but can mock and escape it at any time.

I hate how westernized my knowledge is. I'd like to be a Japanese ambassador (probably didn't exist the time) or something like that, go around and look at western europe and then go back to asia.

As far as western history goes, the 18th century is my favorite by far. For fashion, architecture, and so on...definitely late 18th century. You can find a high number of essays, philosophy, literature, plays, etc from the 18th century in my book collection. And I now keep a binder full of maps, print-outs, and all sorts of things relating to the French Revolution. And just yesterday I corresponded with a historian who sent me a pdf of one of his papers...which I'm going to print out and add to my binder. I'm THAT weird about that century.

Of course, because I love all history, I'm interested in the 19th century too. But I'm just not AS obsessed with it.

At the start of the 18th century it was only five years since we burned our last witch in Norway.

The 19th, on the other hand, was the age of modern science, Jack the Ripper, my great-grandfather and Queen Victoria. And Sherlock Holmes! It was the Dawn of Civilization as we know it.

Besides, you didn't die at 37 in the 19th century.

Don't forget the long-lasting (into the present day) negative effects of industrialization, imperialism, and Victorian morality. Etc.

Really, the 18th century wasn't a paradise but there was FANTASTIC stuff going on during that time as well. Both centuries had their fair share of good and bad.

And, without advancements made in the 18th century, you wouldn't have seen all the advancements made in the 19th century.

I mean, if you just find the 19th century more interesting to you in particular, that's fine and understandable. But it's not some magical superior century.

Also, the 18th century was the era of the last erudites on Earth. One of them invented the encyclopedia, so all was not lost.

I just hated the fashion.

I'm more of an Edwardian/Belle époque kind of guy.

The 18th had better literature and art. Apart from the fashion, I detest the 19th century.
