I have very strong feelings towards this question, and NO.
8 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Tuesday 10/2/12 - 7:01:13 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'd like for people to mention whether they actually have kids or not when responding.

I have 3, and I'd consider it.

I don't have kids.

So are we talking like a microchip here or something that can emit a radio signal and thus be tracked?

If it's just a chip like the type you put in your dog, then what's the point in that? If your child is lost or abducted, surely when they've got to the stage that someone is wielding a chip reader over them they've already been found? It's not going to stop then from getting taken/wandering off.

Or if it's a chip that emits a signal, I can understand how that would be super useful for finding a lost child.

But for it to emit a signal it would have to either receive an activation signal and then start emitting a signal or be constantly emitting a signal- either way, that's going to require a battery. It'll be much bigger than a chip, it'll have to have some kind of internal antenna.

That seems like a lot to put a child through, especially if you're going to do it a few times so you can change the battery. They'd be scarred. I live in an area where children where children do not routinely go missing, the cons would outweigh the pros.

If I lived in Somalia or something I'd do it in a heartbeat.

TL;DR probably not

Creepy, like branding the poor thing, THIS IS MY PROPERTY.
8 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Tuesday 10/2/12 - 7:29:21 PM EST (GMT-5)
I wouldn't, because I think the potential risk is greater than the potential reward. I wouldn't look down on everyone that did it, but I would if they didn't even consider the downsides before going through with it
8 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Tuesday 10/2/12 - 7:32:07 PM EST (GMT-5)
I would, but I'd take it out as soon as I trusted my kid to go out alone.

8 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Tuesday 10/2/12 - 7:41:03 PM EST (GMT-5)
No. He's bigger than I am, and might object.
8 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Tuesday 10/2/12 - 11:27:34 PM EST (GMT-5)
Definitely not!
8 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Wednesday 10/3/12 - 9:31:41 PM EST (GMT-5)
I wouldn't, being stalked is an awful feeling. It's something that could damage a relationship with your child. Even if you were to destroy it at a certain point. It's just a temptation to check on them all the time, feeding paranoia. Besides... what if someone else got access to information on where they were... Scary.

Chloroform! He'll never know

Um tbh I dunno, I don't have kids and don't intend on having kids, my dog is microchipped and for good reason, if he was ever lost I'd want him to be found, however, like imagination pointed out. That's only good if they're found and then could be tracked back to you.

8 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Wednesday 10/3/12 - 11:02:27 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'm not going to have any kids.
8 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Sunday 10/7/12 - 2:11:07 PM EST (GMT-5)
Only 20% think you should. I would definitely choose this and then when they were 18 they could get in removed if they wanted. I would feel better knowing I could find them if they were kidnapped though.
8 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Sunday 10/7/12 - 6:47:39 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'd prefer something in their watch or something. What if the kidnapper finds out about it and decides to cut it out?
8 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Monday 10/8/12 - 1:16:40 PM EST (GMT-5)
I would but only if they were okay with it.
8 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Monday 10/8/12 - 2:27:41 PM EST (GMT-5)
Of course it's tempting to have something that could help out in certain cases but the chance of those things happening really seems so low (I think the media blows a lot of things out of proportion). The fact that I don't think those things are all THAT likely to happen combined with the way microchipping children comes off as....really creepy...to me....

I would probably not microchip any children if I had any.
8 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Wednesday 10/10/12 - 10:41:14 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'd probably do it.
8 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Thursday 10/11/12 - 1:27:03 AM EST (GMT-5)
I sure wouldnt. Kidnappers (the kids themselves if they are so inclined) could remove it themselves.

Also this just seems like a "one thing will lead to another" type of thing. First its voluntary, then its mandatory. Maybe Im just paranoid though.
8 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Friday 10/12/12 - 11:28:06 AM EST (GMT-5)
I have kids and I wouldn't do it. The potential for mis-use by the government is too great for my comfort.
8 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Monday 10/15/12 - 10:54:32 PM EST (GMT-5)
I would never it is an invasion of privacy and if you can't trust your self to keep track of your kid than you should not have one
8 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Tuesday 10/16/12 - 8:54:20 AM EST (GMT-5)
I haven't any kids, but i do want them one day. The idea is great, but then if you think about it, who can find the kid? Can the chip be hacked in any way? What if it is misused? What if it harms the kid?
And also, a kid is a kid, you have to trust them to be able to care of themselves. I'd be more than pissed if i found out i had a chip in my body.
8 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Tuesday 10/16/12 - 2:17:14 PM EST (GMT-5)
I don't have kids.

I think its healthier to be able to trust your children, and not have to track them like that.

But if that's not possible, or they are very young, I am not against it but its not something that should stay on the kid once they became mature.
8 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Wednesday 10/17/12 - 12:40:45 AM EST (GMT-5)
I'd microchip myself. I'd never microchip someone else.
8 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Wednesday 10/17/12 - 1:56:26 PM EST (GMT-5)
I have 52 kids.
I wouldn't want this sh*t in me and I wouldn't expect my kid to have one.
8 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Saturday 10/20/12 - 11:03:01 PM EST (GMT-5)
no i have no kids but stll i'd think chipping them is wierd i mean people trust your kids
