The Art of War is a good book, BTW. Its applicable to a lot more than stratagems for killing people.
I'm not too keen on complete pacifism, its naive IMHO. Peace is a great goal when its practical to strive for, though. I do think it helps to know your opponent (the warmakers or creators of general strife)- So yeah, their tactics should be studied.

Hm....
I think that being well-versed in the art of war can work towards or against peace, depending upon the situation and the people involved.
So yes, someone could use a knowledge of warfare to prevent it, yet they could just as easily use such knowledge to cause it or perpetuate it.
And I'm not sure to what degree a knowledge of war *strategy* is necessary to achieve peace.
If you say that, you've essentially concluded that in some situations peace can only be attained through warfare.
I'm not entirely sure if I agree with that or not.

To put it differently:
"If you look like a bodybuilder, then people smaller than you would be stupid to fight you, and other bodybuilders will respect you too much for petty fighting."
Then again, us Americans have a bit of a 'mafia' mentality. Hell, our dollar bill has an eagle with arrows in one claw and olive branches in the other. What this means is "Look, I'm gunna trust yous, but Ifya f-up, I'll break your f-in kneecaps, capice?"

if you can't fight and don't fight, other cultures and countries can just take you over and walk all over you, and do whatever they want with you. Therefore you obviously have to be willing to destroy your enemies. that's as old as humanity.

Sun-Tzu was a great philosopher, if somewhat harsh in some respects.
Even the War Resisters International has military analysts.

I agree with your not agreeing. A Pax Romana is no Pax at all. I think peace is more than just the absence of violence; using the threat of violence to keep a population from engaging in violence is not, to my mind, peaceful.

Nothing's more frustrating than being oppressed *and* preached at by your oppressor about their moral superiority.
Have the balls to be the bad guy or shut the hell up.

The Romans did so well for so long because they pretty much left the occupied peoples to their own devices, as long as they paid taxes. The Romans didn't interfere with their internal politics, or pushed their religion on anyone.
After Nerva, Traian and Hadrian Rome went downhill, but IMHO that was because Rome was withering from inside.
So if you're going to war in the first place, the Pax Romana philosophy sounds like a good option to me.
But I digress. Sorry!

Looking at this, my answer would immediately be false, because anyone can "want" peace.
However, in digging a bit deeper it seems to me some people may want it more. Think of families of fallen soldiers - I can't truthfully say that peace is more important to me than them, unless they pull a Lieutenant Dan and say "That was his/her destiny." Then again, some people may want war more than others, too. It's all relative, I suppose.
