Not with "life lesson" sort of things like what you've listed, no.

Yes. I have to say I've learned a lot of lessons through other people. A lot of "what not to do" lessons from other people. Also a lot of "what to do" lessons.

I think you can easily learn through other people, but experiencing it yourself almost always leads to a more powerful impact on a person.

Can you truly learn anything?

Yes, but I'll need to be really more cautious since it still didn't happen directly to myself.

Not for some instances. I read about them alot, but when the actual situation arrives, you'd wonder why you never paid attention the first time.

no i learned the hard way, some things you have to experience yourself. because otherwise someone who is kind enough to try to explain it sounds like just so much bla bla. and its unavoidable that some things are like that.

Well I didn't have to murder someone and go to prison to learn not to murder people.

Umm yes.

Of course. Isn't this ability one of the things that distinguishes human intelligence from that of other animals?

That is a deterrent thing, but would you know how murdering a person feels like unless you actually murder them - or how living in a prison is really like unless you've been an inmate.

The key word is _truly_ here. Like you can read over something in 10 different places, but to actually go through it the first time is pretty much luck of the draw.

I could never listen to all the good advice that's come my way. It's a shame, but it's also very true. I had to figure it out for myself.

Well you are not licking envelopes for no good reason as that story is just an urban legend.

Watching negative things happen to people because of their actions can deter you from doing the same thing.

I don't have to make EVERY mistake for myself. It only feels that way sometimes.

You can be prepared for it.
