I think that both are equally successful (possibly introverts with a marginal lead) up until a tipping point, which occurs sometime between the end of sophomore year of college and the end of the first year of grad school.
Basically, after this point, it is more important to create connections and learn from the experience of your instructors and peers. All but the most exceptional of introverts have to become extroverted to some extent, or fail.

One good relevant joke:
An introverted mathematician is someone who will stare at his shoes when he's talking to you.
An extroverted mathematician is someone who will stare at your shoes when he's talking to you.

As far as high school goes, I would say that introverts have the edge.
Extroverts like to party and often find distractions from their schoolwork.

I think it has more to do with determination and discipline than whether you are introverted or extroverted. I suppose certain traits could serve as an advantage or disadvantage in general, but the way I see it, people of both personality types can be equally focused or unfocused, simply going about their accomplishments or lack there of by different methods.

I think people who have the self-confidence to lean toward extroversion have advantages in just about everything.

Extroverts probably make more money in the world. It really doesnt matter in really life what abilities you have, or any at all, the people who talk their way into stuff and somehow get along with people do well. Most people annoy the poo out of me, always have. There's nothing to be done about it. I'm doomed to low success all my life because i can't stand most people.
