It has only been a year.
10 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Monday 3/22/10 - 2:30:51 PM EST (GMT-5)
I haven't seen any evidence of it.

Probably, but I think we'll see more effects with younger kids and it won't be noticeable for 10 years

I wouldn't be surprised if some have. It makes sense.

Probably not

I remember some organisations (e.g. NAACP) claiming that he had at the time of his election, and theres been some individual cases in the news in which hes played a role where others might not (e.g. the Henry Louis Gates Jr. incident) but I've heard little about whether this has been observed in terms of social change.

I'm not entirely sure where to look for them tbh, a rise in employment rates for black people, an increase in college applications or educational attainment? As said, its probably too early to see any large changes if they have been inspired. And of course, with social inequality, the inspiration for change isn't necessarily enough to be able to do much about it.

That's why I think this is a silly question. The whole idea behind being trapped in a cycle of poverty and racism is that you are, well, trapped. I'm most people want to be out of it and maybe some feel slightly more hopeful that they will but it isn't going to change anything in and of itself - there's no way for anyone to notice this.

Sorry I didn't mean to phrase the question in a way that was hard to understand.

i think everyone is worse off. it doesn't matter if you're black or white or latino or arabic or asian. it's not like one president could magically reverse all social injustice.

worse off compared to what?
worse off than where we were under bush?
maybe, but that's mostly bush's fault
him and the republican controlled congress

Some may have been inspired, but the growing income gap between the very wealthy and everyone else suggests that inspiration is not enough.

It's the hope and change.

I don't think black folks were lacking in inspiration before Obama, I think they were lacking in opportunity. There has been no increase in opportunity since the advent of the Obama administration, unless you're a CEO or major shareholder, at which point your opportunity to plunder the corpse of a once great nation has been extensive.
