Getting offended has to do with is how emotional a person is, not how intelligent they are.

I find that intelligent people can more easily spot subtle racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia etc.

Whether or not they are more offended by it is another matter. Most I know are just cynical.

Well it could just be "emotional intelligence".

No. They tend to not get offended because they're too dumb to realize they are being insulted.

I think it's just the opposite. I think a lot of very thoughtful and intelligent people sometimes tend to over think things, and might read too much into a comment that someone made about them.
10 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Wednesday 3/17/10 - 1:10:03 AM EST (GMT-5)
I think it depends on the person, and the circumstances. I know intelligent and unintelligent people with both tough skin and sensitive emotions. I think it usually has to do with one's upbringing and environment more than one's intelligence.

Hey! Who are you calling unintelligent??

But honestly I can't see how intelligence comes into it

how dare you suggest such a thing

I agree
10 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Wednesday 3/17/10 - 11:25:46 AM EST (GMT-5)
It has to do with there sensitivity and how emotional they are. Their intelligence is out of the question.

I think they are a lot more prone to being easily offendable, probably because they don't think as logically as a more intelligent person. I think intelligent people are much more likely to think "I'm offended by this, but it's just a perspective different than mine and it's not worth being upset about".

Yes we are lol

Those capable of being offended deserve to be. I consider certain jokes offensive, but in the end if you say them then I won't be your friend or think kindly of you. Big whoop.

I find this question to be offensive.
10 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Wednesday 3/17/10 - 1:02:46 PM EST (GMT-5)
Having pride has nothing to do with intelligence.
10 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Wednesday 3/17/10 - 1:33:49 PM EST (GMT-5)
It depends on the person. I don't really see what intelligence has to do with it though. I think it deals more with how sensitive or emotional that person is.

I think the more intelligent are more easily offended. They are often so sure they are right. Perhaps it'd be more correct to say 'those that think they more intelligent'.
10 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Wednesday 3/17/10 - 4:54:37 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'd say it depends on the offense. Smart people will more likely notice subtle insults. Though it honestly depends on how emotional they are.
10 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Wednesday 3/17/10 - 5:19:18 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think unintelligent people are going to take things the wrong more than intelligent people, (though this is a personal belief) however, from my experience, whgich is very low on the subject, unintelligent people have an easier time getting over things. One moment they're angry, then next they are fine.
There's one person in my class that gets upset over really little things, and she's very intelligent, though I think that may be from her past experiences.

I was going to say almost the same thing, but from the other direction: the unintelligent (the truly unintelligent) seem to me not to get offended often enough. They tend to be self-centered, crass, inconsiderate, and think being offended is a sign of weakness, as if nothing really is offensive and only the weak allow things to get to them.

You only get offended if you're looking to be.

That's a bit oversimplified. By the same token, you could say the only way to never get offended is to be completely oblivious and apathetic. That would also be too simple, though.

It has a lot more to do with how well socialized you are. Its easy to tell whether something is meant to be offensive or not if you have any level of sense with your interactions with other human beings.
