Movies have brought us great actors, from all over the world. But sometimes I wonder if I wouldn't get more drawn in the story if it wasn't a movie star playing it.

But I know damn well it wouldn't attract as much people.

I just wonder... what do you think? Question Who's Online | Find Members | Private Messages

When watching a movie, do you think it would help believing it if you didn't know the actors?

I'm thinking, this being the age of reality tv, maybe there is an influence.

I reckon sometimes you're so tied up watching the actor that you miss parts of the story. Lesser known actors would let you focus on the story more.

But then studios don't pay the big bucks to the stars for no reasons...people want to see them.

It could, it's certainly easier to picture someone as an regular joe or everyman when you don't recognize them (like District 9) but the truth is that it shouldn't; any good actor would be able to get past that.

so the natural question comes: do you feel more sucked into the story when it's a foreign movie even if you don,t know the language?

I think if I actually knew the actors personally [if that's what you might mean,] their acting wouldn't be as persuasive if I knew they felt/acted/thought/were significantly different than whatever role they were playing.

That being said, if they were similar to their role, I suppose it would enhance the acting.

But an acting career cannot depend on that kind of a stipulation. Great actors are great actors because they can expand beyond their own personality, and mindset.

I hate that. It usually only mostly happens with Jim Carrey but that kinda makes me laugh more.

I generally seem to like obscure actors more.

but I never really "believe" movies

I am always aware on one level that it is just people pretending, but on another I find it extremely easy to suspend my disbelief and just accept what the movie tells me and immerse myself in that world.
And so it doesn't really matter to me if I know the actor or not, if they're good then I just forget about them in other roles

No. It's the talent of the actor, not his face.

These days I usually don't know who the actors are.

Now when I don't know who the actresses are, that's when I'll start to worry.

If they're a good enough actor, you forget who they really are when the movie starts

There's this part in Fight Club when Jack says; "I felt sorry for all the guys packin into gyms, trying to look like what Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger said they should."

Then Tyler says "Self-improvement is masturbation."

Kinda ironic coming out of the mouth of Brad Pitt, doncha think? Don't pick mega stars to play anti-hollywood heros. It takes me right out of the movie.
