The massive 8.8 earthquake that struck Chile may have changed the entire Earth's rotation and shortened the length of days on our planet, a NASA scientist said Monday.
The quake, the seventh strongest earthquake in recorded history, hit Chile Saturday and should have shortened the length of an Earth day by 1.26 milliseconds, according to research scientist Richard Gross at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif." Do you think the quake in Chile actually moved the earth?
Sounds a bit bs to me honestly..

It isn't something to think about, the scientists stated the earth moved.

Really? What awesome knowledge do you possess to even begin to call BS on this?

Well, if building the Three Gorges Dam in china caused a shift in Earths rotation to to massive changing of water displacement (or something), I dont see why a massive shift of tectonic plates couldnt do the same..

But then again, I read that off of cracked.

Anything that changes the mass distribution will have some effect on spin... the real question is if the change is measurable.

Bill Nye was talking about it on CNN. Bill Nye the science guy. Has to be true.

Seriously, I have no reason not to believe it.
9 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Tuesday 3/2/10 - 9:12:22 PM EST (GMT-5)
i suspected this had happened because i woke up 1.26 milliseconds later than usual this morning

Bill Nye still has a job? Wow! That's actually awesome.

Okay, lets say the Earth did move...so what?

Yup I read this on CNN, but 1.26 milliseconds is like 1.26 millionth of a second. lol.. If only we could make earth days significantly longer..
9 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Wednesday 3/3/10 - 7:04:15 PM EST (GMT-5)
how big can it be??

OMG EARTHQUAKES MAKE THE EARTH MOVE??!?!?!?!? OMGOMGOMG NO WAI

No that's probably absurb. The earth is a huge mass spinning at 600 mph. How would an earthquake, inside the earth, move the earth from its orbit around the sun that has been going on for 6 billion years?

Firstly, the length of an Earth day has nothing to do with orbiting the sun.

Secondly, yes, the Earth is a huge mass, and the difference the quake made, if you actulaly understood basic math, is miniscule. So not at all far fetched.

Thirdly, the f*ck would you know better than scientists?

Two reasons.

One, earthquakes have no influence on the Earth's rotation around the sun and no one is claiming they can. They can influence the way the earth rotates on its own axis.

Two. The earth is 4.54 billion years old, not 6 billion.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. You're a nuclear weapon.

Well it might have moved the earth... but how can we tell? It may have moved a layer of the earths crust... but that doesn't have anything do you with the days getting shorter... it just doesn't make any sense. Also, just one simple 8.8 earthquake cannot influence the change in the earths tectonic plates.... THEY ARE LOCKED INTO PLACE! they may drift away for some reason... but they can't move by force... only in time.

What a ridiculous point to nitpick.
