That would be a nightmare with soda. Is diet soda that unhealthy? What about plain or even flavored seltzer? And how about the new products that are fortified with vitamins? Would the tax apply to these fancy styles of coffee that are probably worse for you than regular soda?

However something like a tax on products that still contain trans fats could work I suppose.

No i live in California and these taxes simply spiral. First it was cigarette and booze taxes which everyone accepts. Then it was soda taxes, then taxes on periodicals (magainzes etc.) now they are dreaming up even more taxes ad infinitum. PLUS the sales tax is now ALMOST 10% on top of that! The gov't is Jabba the Hut, it eats and eats and never ever gets full!

I prefer them over income and property taxes

It's a good idea in theory but a tax like that will unfairly target the poor.

poor people don't have to buy soda and fast food...the reason they buy it now is because its cheap, but if it were taxed than maybe more would buy staple foods....ya know, pasta, rice, local produce, maybe splurge on some meat once or twice a week. And then there wouldn't be so many obese poor people too lazy to find a good job because their brain is clogged with the garbage they eat.

The government has no right to tell me what I can and can't eat. Artificially inflating prices on certain foods is not something I'm ok with.
