If actions are stronger than words then why is the pen mightier than the sword?

Good question. I've been drinking too much and am too tired to think about it right now though, so I'll try tomorrow.

It's simple... different people made those sayings, and they had different opinions.

I agree with "the penis mightier than the sword."

^ If that wasn't deliberate, it has to be the best typo ever.

I can't read this question without thinking of the penis mightier bit on SNL.

"The pen is mightier than the sword" addresses the potential magnitude of impact of a statement: in other words, that which is written can be dispersed across the land, but a sword can only fall on one enemy at a time.

"Actions are louder than words" addresses another rather different matter entirely: the degree to which actions and words shape how we view character (and rationality) of an individual.

The two really aren't contradictory at all.

Because all great and momumentous begin with somebody putting their pen to paper or their signature. both the world wars, men on the moon, all of it had to start with orders being given, people being rounded up, and money being budgeted. THATs why the saying is true.
Monday 9/14/09 - 2:29:32 PM
It's a sharp f*cking pen.
Monday 9/14/09 - 4:03:18 PM
wow you can pick up a gun and kill someone...you cant....well I guess you could but It would be hard....But you don't kill people with pens its obvious!
Monday 9/14/09 - 7:23:10 PM
Both are true but in different contexts thats why they seem to clash. The pen IS mightier then the sword because words can hurt a person more than a weapon. Actions DO speak louder then words because a person can say anything they want but can they actually walk the walk? It sounds funny when you ask the question, but really they both make sense.

No point in complaining... TAKE REVENGE NOW!!!

My theory is that the actions of one man are stronger than that man's words. However, if that man writes something [the pen] the inspires many to take up his cause, it is mightier than if he had just grabbed a weapon [sword] and gone out to fight for the cause alone.
Monday 9/14/09 - 9:15:11 PM
The pen is mightier than the sword, but the pen is nothing without the sword.

I can get on board with that.

The pen is partially action, signing contracts and putting up bills and laws and stuff. So there.
