I don't, especially if I only have one or two things, and/or if the person in front of me only has one or two things. I just allow adequate space between our intended purchases.

A pet peeve of mine is if the person in FRONT of me puts a divider between our stuff. Chill out; I'm not trying to scam you into paying for my stuff.

The person behind me can do whatever they want. Question Who's Online | Find Members | Private Messages

Do you always use the checkout dividers when in line to buy groceries?

That's why I use the self-checkout whenever I can. Cuts out unnecessary human contact in my day.

I always put it down.

Twice I've forgotten and had the checker start to combine my purchase with the other person.

Once when I was behind and once when I was in front.

Not normally. Usually, I just figure that a decent amount of space in between each others items then that should be enough.

But if there is like 2 billion items, then a divider is needed.

Who cares? I really don't understand why there's so many bland, pointless questions posted on Youthink.

I was put it down for the people behind me and i never realized I could be upsetting people. I figure that way he or she knows all my stuff is up there and I don't have big boxes under the cart or something.

I always use it and I always put it down for the person behind me.

And you should chill out. I don't put it down because I think the person behind is trying to scam me, I put it down because they can't reach it and they usually like to stand there holding their huge basket rather than load their groceries without a divider.

I always do it, and in a slightly compulsive-neurotic way, I have to make sure there is one on each side of my purchases. I even place / stack my items efficiently and put like groceries together. I even organize the candy / magazines / baskets / collection jar for some childhood ailment. I align it all so it makes some sort of aesthetic sense. I'm sure people get annoyed by this.

I just get a anxious / stressed when in the line waiting to be checked, so maybe it's just stuff I do to keep busy until I get to leave the pressure of it.

huh? that made no sense.
i'd just prefer if people didn't throw their compulsiveness behind me on the checkout line. take care of your own things and be on your way.

it probably doesn't upset other people too much and is only a light pet peeve of mine

Flove- - often, the person behind me is waiting until they're close enough to put down the divider between their food and mine. I put it down first so they don't have to, and am often thanked for it!
11 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Thursday 5/7/09 - 8:42:31 PM EST (GMT-5)
oh i see

i'm seeing where we're differing

situation A: person in front puts down all his groceries before person behind begins. person in front puts down divider before person behind even puts anything on

situation B: person in front has put all his things on the conveyor belt. person behind starts to put his things. person in front turns around and slaps a divider between the two piles, even if person behind has left a fair chunk of space between them

situation A wouldn't bother me, it's situation B.

Hahaha, true! That's why I shop at O'malia's. They don't have self-checkouts but they don't have conveyor belts in their aisles and it's rarely busy enough to have a substantial line.

11 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Thursday 5/7/09 - 8:51:19 PM EST (GMT-5)
I don't like self check-out. If I wanted to be a bagger I'd apply for a job as one.
11 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Thursday 5/7/09 - 8:52:42 PM EST (GMT-5)
Usually if I have a lot of stuff. It just makes like a little easier .
11 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Thursday 5/7/09 - 8:54:45 PM EST (GMT-5)
I rarely have enough to justify going through anything but the self checkout.
When I do though, I always put a divider down.
11 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 5/10/09 - 11:35:34 AM EST (GMT-5)
When there are a lot of items, yes.
Hah, I remember someone telling me that the cashier didn't know what the divider was and asked him if he knew how much it costs. He then told the cashier that he had changed his mind and didn't want it anymore. XD
11 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Thursday 5/21/09 - 3:26:06 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'll put a divider down if there's a line, but usually there isn't

I think you are reading too much into it. the person in front is likely just trying to be nice...

I'll use them if I have a bunch of stuff and the 'dividing line' between my stuff and the other person's stuff may not be clear. If it's just a couple of items, I don't bother with it...

11 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Tuesday 7/7/09 - 7:55:08 PM EST (GMT-5)
I always try to use them. I've had the check out person ring up my items with the items of the person in front of me too many times. You can't count on the person in front of you to notice either. Grocery stores are just so busy and hectic that it makes sense.

I'm not sure why it bothers you if the person in front puts it down. I think it's a considerate thing for them to do.
11 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Tuesday 7/7/09 - 8:13:35 PM EST (GMT-5)
I will usually put one down, especially if I have a lot of items.
11 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Tuesday 7/7/09 - 8:38:26 PM EST (GMT-5)
Ah, yes. They are there for a reason. I don't freak out about it, though..
11 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Tuesday 7/7/09 - 8:39:28 PM EST (GMT-5)
What kind of backwards world do you live in? It's a common courtesy to put the divider thing behind your stuff, so the person behind you doesn't have to reach over and do it themselves.
