When you hear the term "America," which do you think of first: a country or a continent?

America is a country, NORTH America is a continent so I think of a country first.

We are actually called the United States *OF* America, not simply "America."

I agree...

I think people who have an issue with people calling the US "America" or citizens of the US "Americans" are being a bit pedantic.

I remember a complaint about how people from the USA shouldn't have the exclusive right to call themselves American, since the term refers to more than one thing.

But it's a ridiculous argument...who would call themselves "American" as a way of saying "I'm from one of two continents"? If you want to identify yourself by continent, you'll use North and South. If you want to just say I'm from this huge area on this side of the world, you're a deeply silly person.

If I recall correctly, the USA is also the only country in the Americas which uses the word America in its name. Makes sense to me to call people from there Americans.

We all know that - but that can't be used in arguement. Otherwise you would always have to refer to some countries as The Democratic Republic of Congo, or The Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia, etc, instead of just Macedonia

Same with me, but technically America is neither a continent or a country because, as you said, the continents are NORTH and SOUTH America, but the country is the United States of America

I think of the US, I usually call it the US 'cause otherwise otherwise it could get confused with the continent(s).

The country, I guess.

But in reality, I think of non-Americans when I hear that word, because no American that I know refers to the U.S. as "America".

ever since I called a Canadian American I've stuck with America= USA interpretation although logically you could say that North America + South America = America. I think that might have been my idea until the angry canadian!!
8 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Thursday 7/16/09 - 12:03:32 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think of North America + South America. but, depending on the context, I think it's fine to refer to U.S.'ers exclusively as Americans.
8 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Thursday 7/16/09 - 12:42:53 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think of the country. Anyone who makes a big deal out of this is being ridiculous.
4 yrs ago - Wednesday 11/20/13 - 7:09:53 PM EST (GMT-5)
If just "America" is said, then the US....

if "South" or "North" is placed before America, then I tink of South or North America.
4 yrs ago - Wednesday 11/20/13 - 8:17:12 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think they're talking about probably North America, but maybe South America. I don't assume they're talking about the US until I get more information. It's not a big deal for me, I just know at least once Canadian who calls himself American, so I know not to guess.
