The peak of the Roman empire was after the passage from Genesis where God created the Earth is 7 days.. so while I don't know for sure, it's possible that the origins are still Biblical.

It comes from a mathematical forumula for measuring the passing of 1 year. The same formula was discovered by many different ancient civilisations, so it it remains to this day, even though there are probably different ways of doing it.

As for the naming of the days after gods, that doesn't apply to all languages...
