Does it bother you when people believe in phony science like astrology?
It bothers me a lot more than religious faith because it's just as unfounded scientifically as religious faith but they think it is scientific while religious people are aware they just have faith and not science on their side.

I personally believe in astrology, but I don't call it a science..it's something to believe in the same way religion is. There are millions of people who believe religion is fact though..they believe the bible is fact..so if it's fact, is it not a science to them?

No, I love it. It's like one of that last remnants of things like soothsaying, or reading the auguries by looking at chicken entrails.

I think pseudo-science is the term you're looking for.

The difference between pseudo-science or something like religion is that a pseudo-science generally claims to be scientific, or at least, to use elements of the scientific method. I actually saw a statement a few years back from someone who was high up in one of the British astrological associations as to why it was a scientific field of inquiry.

I'm not sure what you mean by that?

It doesn't bother me any more than other belief systems or religions. As long as nobody is shoving it down my throat, I have no problem.

Personally, I've never met anybody who claims that astrology is scientific. I've also met very few people who wholeheartedly believe in it and base their life decisions on it.

The American Federation of Astrologers (it was the first thing that came up on the google search, I assume its the largest) claim it to be scientific, as does the Astrological Association in the UK.

I really hate those "Oh, you're such a typical aquarius!" people. "Well, I'm Saggitarius ....", "Of course you are! I knew that!"

"while religious people are aware they just have faith and not science on their side"

You must be unaware of either the "Discovery Institute", Ben Stein, or the creationist museum.

So no, pseudoscience, while not something I support, doesn't bother me NEARLY as much as religion.

No, I don't care as long as they don't bother me with it

It's no more a phoney science than a badger is a phoney ironing board.

scientology sucks

Like astrology?

Nah, it doesn't bother me too much unless they're really obsessive over it. If they think of it as a superstition, or something that may or may not be true, then it's not so bad.

Astrology, Scientology, Mormonism... all that weird sh*t irritates me.

Not at all, it doesn't bother me that other people believe something that isn't true. Let them. It does not concern me.
12 yrs ago - Friday 10/10/08 - 5:48:43 PM EST (GMT-5)
no. i believe in astrology.

I don't think Astrology could be considered a science. And scientology is northing more then a cult.

It only bothers me if they try to have an intelligent debate about it (with me). I have a friend who believes in psychics and it frustrates me immensely when she proclaims:

"Of course it's real. How else do you think John Edwards determined that guy's deceased mother's name?"

And I respond:

"You're right it is impressive. Although I'd love to know why her parents named her 'I see an M - Maybe Mary or Missy or Michelle or Milly, as in Mildred'...Jones"

Good god, there are far more important things to get upset about than that.

If someone believing in astrology gets your panties in a twist, you need to be looking at bigger issues.

No because people have their own opinions
11 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 11/23/08 - 6:03:07 PM EST (GMT-5)
That doesn't bother me as much as people who believe in Creationism. They're dangerous.

The question presupposes the phoniness first of the subject (astrology), then assumes astrology is a science (which is debatable). It's unanswerable if one disagrees with the faulty statement in the first place.

I think it's more bullsh*t than religion, because at least most religious people reject science.

Those who try to add to it in an attempt to not look crazy are the ones who annoy me the most.

What?? Where I come from - and I'm sure that's true for most of the Western World - most religious people are far from rejecting science.

Not really, they have interesting viewpoints.
