As far as language goes in them, yes I think they are a bad influence. Violence or anything else? Nah not really.

If you're talking about video games being violent or sexist, maybe. It depends entirely on what you're playing; not all video games are full of that sort of content.

If you're talking about video games (I'd say the same of TV and the internet) reinforcing and contributing to someone's short attention span and lack of focus, I'm inclined to agree; but I'm informed enough about different video games to make any definitive statement.

First of all I'd like to address the "Language" issue. If your naive enough to believe children got their language from a VIDEO GAME, your nuts-they got it from mommy and daddy, TV or their friends. On top of that, if you're letting your impressionable 10 yr old play GTA then you need to re-evaluate your parenting. To go even further, if your playing a ZOMBIE GAME and you're struck with a sudden urge to go eat people-it wasn't the game that gave you that mentality-and you should immediately seek help. What is wrong with you people, DONT BLAME THE VIDEOGAMES.
Blame the Parents.

The only game I can think of that could be bad is Grand Theft Auto. Other then that, I don't think saving princesses, killing aliens, zombies or just plain fighting could do any harm.
12 yrs ago - Sunday 5/4/08 - 9:07:11 PM EST (GMT-5)
Maybe Grand Theft Auto.

I remember when I was at work and one of my friends pointed at the wall where the games where. Must have been around 40-50 on there... and out of all of them there was maybe 2 or 3 that didn't involve killing. Video games certainly do contribute (along with other factors) the growing violence we see today. There's been a number of studies showing it increases aggression and violence...

Children aren't supposed to be playing Grand Theft Auto.

As long as parents are responsible and don't ignore the age ratings assigned to games, there should be no issue.

Ok The Only Game That Is bad For Children to Play IS Probally GTA.
but that is the reason that they gave it a M rating you have to be 17 to buy it.
if the parents decide to buy it for their children it is the parents fault that the child is messed

games can actually help children in some ways
DDR helps kids excercise
Guitar Hero and Rock Band help children with their hand eye coordination

there are even some game show video games out there that teach kids stuff

as for the other action/horror/FPS games those are there merely for fun if parents don't want their kids playing them then the parents wont buy them its entirely up the adults

so dont blame the game when the parents are to blame

It depends on the videogames. Some videogames are definitely intended for a mature audience. Others can actually be good for children to play. I think that videogames had a very positive influence on my youth.

If a person is adversely influenced by a video game and thus has difficulty distinguishing between reality and fantasy; I would suggest they were not mentally stable to begin with.

I don't know, I would say that the ability to stare at a screen for hours on end playing a game is actually quite a long attention span.

Video games are a scapegoat for a wider range of cultural influences, problems with the individual, and bad parenting decisions.

They've actually found them helpful in cases of kids with attentional disorders in that respect, because they do focus their attention on them periods of time without as much trouble as with other things. Makes it a good format for teaching/learning.

I've seen it said commonly that it effects attention, though the same thing was said about MTV style TV and the quick cutting style, so I'm not sure if it has any unique negative influences as a format.

Content wise, I don't think things like sex/violence etc is any worse in video games as it is in films or on TV (though I do support legal age restrictions for both), so again I don't think theres anything unique in that respect.
