A government has a duty to its citizens. Mainly, a duty to stay the hell out of our way 99% of the time. We, as citizens, have a duty to each other, and that's what caring for your country is about. I don't owe the government a thing - quite the contrary. Taxpayers PAY for them to live, and allow them a life of comfort and luxury doing all the things with my money that I'm not legally allowed to do with it. THEY owe US. And when they sit in big, comfy chairs and wave over a map and say, "My oil stocks aren't doing as well as they should. Go die over there, K?" there's only one type of war that should be happening, and it's the Revolutionary kind.
Of course, people may disagree. It's a free country. I base my beliefs on the writings of our Jefferson and Paine, primarily, not George Bush. If he can write. Can he? Has someone taught that monkey to pick up a pen? Whatever. |

The only duty I have towards my govt. is paying taxes, and jury duty that I attended today. |

The government has a duty to the people, and the people have the duty to make sure the government is carrying out it's duty to the people.
Makes sense?
The government serves the people
The people make sure the government can do their job |

I'm going to go with the entire government contract idea that people allow certain infringement on their rights in return for validating a government to provide protection. |

I believe that my government has a duty to me...I'm one of the people who voted for them...Well would vote for them if my vote wouldn't be invalid because I made a mistake... |

I think a careful balance should be maintained.
I can't expect my country to provide for me if I am not willing to work for my country. |

As said in V for Vendetta,
"The people should not be afraid of their government, the government should be afraid of its people."
Which is sort of tilted toward the idea that the government has a duty to us. In almost every society governments were originally formed by uniting people under a single banner to finally get things done. Therefore, the utmost important role of any government is to protect and please it's people, so long as we all do what we're supposed to. |

Since I'm an anarchist, I think a government is useless... |

the government was created to serve and protect its people, but if it's a government both for and by the people, then that requires effort on the people as well. |
