If by entertainment we can't include any form of the arts, this is pretty hard. I'm including essayists whose writing is primarily political.

Amelia Earhart
Betsy Ross
Condoleezza Rice
Madeline Albright
Hillary Clinton
Gloria Steinem
Harriet Tubman
Susan B. Anthony
Sacajawea
Janet Reno
Susan Faludi
Geraldine Ferarro
Naomi Wolf
Ann Richards
Nancy Pelosi
Can I inlude that little girl who fell in the well? (joke)
Olympia Snowe
Barbara Boxer
Diane Feinstein
Elizabeth Stanton

Okay that was basically a list of feminists and Senators, but they're famous women so it's fine.

9 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Tuesday 2/26/08 - 2:38:06 AM EST (GMT-5)
Oh and I forgot one of my all time favorites, that obnoxious but hysterical atheist, Madeline Murray O'Hair.
9 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Tuesday 2/26/08 - 3:14:38 AM EST (GMT-5)
Grace Paley
Harper Lee
Amelia Earhart
Diane Fossey
Eleanor Roosevelt
Ruth Benedict
Margaret Mead
S.E. Hinton
Emma Goldman
Susan B. Anthony
Maya Angelou
Terry Gross

I huffed and I puffed, and these women came to mind. I am terrible.
9 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Tuesday 2/26/08 - 7:04:27 AM EST (GMT-5)
That would be a negative. I struggled trying to reach 10.
9 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Tuesday 2/26/08 - 7:08:12 AM EST (GMT-5)
And No... It has little to say about any prior education I've had nor the 'lack' of attention women receive as much as it has to do with my lack of memory on the topic and the lack of care too. Course there are many well known/respected Australian women who would be classified as 'famous', but learning about women like ita buttrose, germaine greer and ms gillard is not in my intrests.
9 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Tuesday 2/26/08 - 8:23:59 AM EST (GMT-5)
Initially I though this would be no problem but with the restrictions you made ... most famous German women seem to be actresses or singers or sports women.

Politicians:
Angela Merkel
Rosa Luxemburg
Catherine the Great

Authors (I'd not include them in entertainment):
Anna Seghers
Annette von Droste-Hülshoff

Classical musician:
Clara Schumann

Other artists:
Paula Modersohn-Becker
Käthe Kollwitz
Gabriele Münter

Others:
Hannah Arendt
Clara Zetkin
Hildegard von Bingen
Edith Stein
Beate Uhse
Alice Schwarzer
Sophie Scholl

... even if I include certain artists I can't even name 20 without googling. A lot of them are actually feminists.
That definitely says something about women in German history and society but I don't find that very surprising.
9 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Tuesday 2/26/08 - 11:24:23 AM EST (GMT-5)
Sapho(Greek ancient poet)
Thessaloniki(Sister of Alexander the Great, the Greek city, Thessaloniki was named after her)
Bouboulina(Greek Indepedence War 1821 heroine)
Manto Maurogenous( Greek Independence War 1821 heroine)
Ntora Bakogianni(Greek Foreign Minister)
Melina Merkouri(besides being and actress she was also Minister of Culture who wanted the Elgin Marbles returned to Greece)

Aleka Papariga( Leader/Secretary of the Greek communist party)
Gianna Aggelopoulou Daskalaki( President of organising committee, Athens 2004 Olympic Games)

I could name others but I cannot come up with more names now.

9 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 2/27/08 - 10:03:14 AM EST (GMT-5)
Yes, I can.

But it doesn't say anything about schools either way.

Who wants to learn about a group of people who frankly didn't do much just so it can be fair?
9 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 2/27/08 - 11:18:51 AM EST (GMT-5)
Hmm...maybe not, if I can't list president's wives
9 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 2/27/08 - 9:07:37 PM EST (GMT-5)

9 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 2/27/08 - 9:27:27 PM EST (GMT-5)

9 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Thursday 2/28/08 - 1:25:22 AM EST (GMT-5)

Laura Ashley ..... Fashion and Interior Designing Entrepreneur.
Lady Godiva .... Social reform protester.

I would not say it's so much an educational bias but a historical social bias, in fact even when I went to junior school in the early sixties, the few female figures (such as Boudicia and Elizabeth Fry) seemed to get a mention to highlight female historical roles.

In fact the majority of female figures seem to have a notoriety because they are female rather than despite it.
9 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Thursday 2/28/08 - 6:52:15 AM EST (GMT-5)
Oh, I forgot about a special category of famous German women!

Eva Padberg
Heidi Klum
Claudia Schiffer

And yes, I do think that does say something about gender bias in society.

Oh well that means I need two more .....

The Duchess of Richmond ..... at whose ball Wellington heard of Napoleon's advance towards Brussels that culminated in the Battle of Waterloo.

Margret Beaufort wife of Edmund Tudor and Mother to Henry VII at 13 years old, grandmother to Henry VIII, instrumental in the final phase of the War of the Roses and the revolt against Richard III, actually next in line to the throne but which she passed to her son and then married him off to the last claimant of the Yorkist line Elizabeth of York.

btw ithinker Maid Marion is a mythical character.
