Mine is a dual-core.

pentium 4 is a single core.

A 4 is also single core, usually the name implies that it is dual by having some reference to the number two or D in it, like the X2 or Pentium D.

Dual core I"m sure since I just bought it last year.

Dual Core's are actually kind of new, even if you bought that computer recently it could still just be a Pentium 4, those are still selling very well.

I am one of those people who knows how to use a computer, but doesn't know anything about hers. Though I'm pretty sure mine's single. Because it's not new or fancy.

I have a 1.33 Ghz PowerPC something processor, iBook G4. That's what it says when I click "about this Mac."

^ single processor.

My powerbook has a single processor, my imac has a dual core.

My MacBook has an Intel Core 2 Duo (dual-core processor.) I bought it last July.

I have no idea. For all I know there's just a very small wizard in there with a complex system of wires pulling him around and making him do spells to cause pictures to appear on the screen when I press buttons.

That's dual core.

This question is for geeks.

Dual core, Pentium D. I'd expect single cores to be phased out in a year or two, the industry is probably about half way though doing so now.

Why anyone needs a quad core at the moment is beyond me though.

Incase they want to play Doom 3, WoW, Assassin's Creed, and run a small company server all at the same time with speed to spare.

(We have an 8-core, and all Mac towers are now 8-core standard. But its not what I'd call a personal computer, it's for running iterative statistical analyses like bayesian maximum likelihoods and markov chain monte carlo models. It also puts out enough heat that your feet stay nice and toasty warm)

Hmm... I'm not sure what kind of data sets you're working with Catch, but is an 8 core necessary for that? Single cores running R handle maximum liklehood estimations, bootstapping and Monte Carlo sampling (I'm not familiar with Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods though) without too much trouble, might take a minute or too though in some cases depending on how many you're generating.

Lets just say that the quad cores take a week to run these data sets. Farming it out to 8 processesors cuts the run time nearly in half.

You're using it to pick your lottery numbers aren't you

If we are, someone's doing a piss poor job of it.

(we do phylogenetic reconstructions with molecular data)
12 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Wednesday 1/16/08 - 3:33:58 PM EST (GMT-5)
Ah, I can see why that would be rather system intensive. How many iterations are generally involved with things like that?
12 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Wednesday 1/16/08 - 4:47:57 PM EST (GMT-5)
I have no idea.
