What child hasn't!? They have some classics. Although I was just looking them up on the web, they have some strange ones too:

The Jew Among Thorns
Sweet Porridge
The White and the Black Bride
Death's Messengers
The Poor Boy in the Grave

But they did write the originals of Cinderella, Snow White and Rapunzel.

Yeah. I remember in the original Cinderella (Aschenputtel) one sister cut a toe off to fit in the slipper... the other has to cut her heel off. And in the end they got their eyes pecked out by birds

I have.

I can't decide yet wheter I prefer their dark tales or the Disney-ized versions. I guess it depends on my mood.

In the original Sleeping Beauty the prince's mother tries to kill the princess and her child by boiling them alive (I think). Then she wants to eat them.

The original I remember of Snow White, the queen ordered a huntsman to cut out her heart. He killed a boar instead (the queen then may or may not have eaten it). The queen also tried to suffocate her by selling her pretty ribbons to lace her bodice and did them up too tight.

In Rapunzel, the witch pushed the prince from the tower and he lost his eyes/eyesight on the thorns below. When freed, Rapunzel found him and her tears returned his eyesight.

Yes, an old edition of Grimm's Fairy Tales was one of the first things I ever read. Warped me for life it did.

I still have the same volume on display in my living room I loved them so much.

Sometime I wonder if I would have the love of books that I do now if I wouldn't have read those stories first. Or maybe I would have liked different kinds of stories than I do know. Who really knows......

No, most children in the U>S. haven't. They're "forbidden" here or something.

I have too (obviously). I have a book that was mothers (and maybe my grandmothers?) when she was little. I love it very much and read it many times as a child... it also had interesting pictures in it.

The only darker version I have read is Rapunzel. Boring.

No, but I am familiar with the fact that many "modern" fairy tales are much "cleaner" than the traditional versions. For instance, the new version of "The Three Little Pigs" has eliminated the Wolf's eating of the first two pigs, and even "Little Red Riding Hood" sometimes has the wolf just lock Grandma in a closet instead of eating her. I pity the next generation. The violent stories were good.

Yes, I read their version of fairy tales before I discovered the cleaner versions.

Not Hansel and Gretel. That one's stayed pretty much the same, and just as appropritely grim (pun intended), what with that business about sending the kids off to fend for themselves and the ending where the Hansel and Gretel close the door behind the witch in an oven and cook her alive.

Anyway, my dad would read one every night out of this huge book of them to my brother and me as bedtime stories when we were little.

Yeah, I couldn't really appreciate them when I was little because they just scared me. But now I can, and I think they're a lot better than the modern day stuff.
