Lonely people are more likely to get sick and die young, and researchers say they may have found out why - their immune systems are haywire. They used a 'gene chip' to look at the DNA of isolated people and found that people who described themselves as chronically lonely have distinct patterns of genetic activity, almost all of it involving the immune system.

The study does not show which came first -- the loneliness or the physical traits. But it does suggest there may be a way to help prevent the deadly effects of loneliness, said Steve Cole, a molecular biologist at the University of California Los Angeles.

Well, no. I already knew being lonely wasn't really healthy.

Not everyone has an easy time going out and making friends though

No. I may be alone a lot, but I never feel lonely.

Not really since I already knew that being lonely isn't healthy emotionally anyway and I don't like it.

Exactly what I was thinking. The word lonely is an indication that you're sad about being alone, and of course being depressed is bad for your health, but it's rarely something that can be cured by going out and gathering up a load of friends (a lot of times you feel lonely when surrounded by people).

Myself, I'm almost always happy to be alone. And even if what was meant by the article was that people who were alone (whether or not they were sad about it) die early, I still wouldn't change my lifestyle. I wouldn't mind missing out on the whole senior citizen experience.

Not really, because I often spend time alone but I don't usually feel "chronically lonely", because I know that I have friends, and if I need to talk to someone I can just call them or invite them over or go over to their place, or I can talk to my mum instead because I'm very close to her. I don't see my friends every day but when I do I enjoy the time that I spend with them, and I enjoy having time to myself as well. It's a good balance.

Man. I can't see this being a problem for me. I sometimes feel like I have TOO MANY friends. Joke. But there ARE times when I could use some down time.

So, we don't know whether loneliness or the physical traits come first. What we do know, is that those physical traits are effects of loneliness. That makes sense.

I don't understand loneliness. It must be an extrovert thing. I'm perfectly content by myself.

Well yes. I've read before that people with vast social networks live longer and healthier lives. I want to be one of those people.
