The internet is more of a luxury than a necessity. Besides, you can always go to your local library if you need to get on the internet that badly.

the old are disadvantaged by their age, and the poor are just plain disadvantaged. No internet talk neccessary.

There are public libraries and relatively cheap internet cafes. There are computer classes for the elderly at senior centers. I think the internet can be an advantage to them in some cases. It can help hook them up with jobs, classes, health info etc. The internet belongs to everyone.

Obviously, yes. Regular internet access isn't quite essential; but it's obviously extremely helpful in a variety of ways (e.g. looking for a job, buying/selling a car, background checks, ordering merchandise, etc.).

Many poor people either can't afford it or don't have access to it; and elderly people have a much harder time figuring out how to use it.

Many older people (such as my mother) are very intimidated by computers and the internet.

Remember, when my mother was young, television hadn't even been invented.

I've given my mother an old computer, and she has internet access, but she only uses it to order books from the library (I bookmarked the library site for her). I haven't even been able to teach her to use e-mail.

I understand what you're saying about older people and computers- my dad can take apart and put back together just about any appliance but he still has trouble finding files he's saved. Maybe its like languages for some people, the older you get the harder it is to master a different skill set.
