While it does seem hypocritical, they aren't there to tell you what their personal preference is. They're there to give you their professional opinion on what is going to help you keep healthy.

very hypocritical.

It is hypocritical, but they are obligated to do it

Not really and a doctor has never told me that.

No,it wouldn't bother me. They obviosly know that is the healthier choice, and whether or not they chose to do so themselves , they are giving you the advice to better your life.

I don't do either, but it wouldn't bother me. I know habits are hard to break, and they just want to help me. Trust doctors, dammit.

Sure - that kind of advice works both ways.

It shouldn't bother you. Just because they don't follow the path to good health, doesn't mean it's anymore more or less valid of a choice.

uh no. it just tells me they are stupid and dont really care about there health. and if you dont do what they do, youll live longer. how could living longer annoy you?

Well it hasn't happened to me, but it would seem a little odd. Then again I wouldn't know their personal life either so maybe they are trying to lose weight and quit smoking.

Being a Dr. they obviously know it's bad for them, but those are two things that are hard to give up.

They can give good advice, even if they don't follow it themselves. Sure it's a bit hypocritical, but that doesn't REALLY enter into it.

Their job is to examine you, find out what's wrong, and tell you how to improve your health. The physicians own health and habits don't actually have an impact on that, other than give people who don't want to make changes an excuse to ignore good advice.

That's very hypocritical, but it's also an addiction, and it's very hard for people to quit.

Someone can be doing things that are bad for themselves, but they can know at the same time that those things are bad and warn others. If it's a doctor, it's part of his job to tell people to stop such behaviors if they will affect the person's health. It doesn't really matter to me that a doctor engaged in the same behavior will still tell a patient to quit.

It makes me think of how I procrastinate all the time but I can tell other people procrastination isn't good and recommend that they not do it.

I don't really see it as hypocritical. It's their job to make recommendations to preserve my health.
