In the era of the metrosexual male, primping and preening are no longer just for the ladies. More and more men are trading in their beer and chips for something more refined. Tea and crumpets, guys?

The so-called 'finishing' school has been around for generations to train young women in etiquette and the social arts. But recently, many schools are trading their debutantes for dudes. On its Web site, The Finishing Academy in Scotland announces: 'The Finishing Academy is not only for today's young ladies. Due to popular demand we are now running courses for ladies, gentlemen, young gentlemen and business people.'

Should boys go to finishing school just like girls sometimes do?

absolutly, if women had to put up with trying to be "ladylike" for centuries, men should also be forced to conform into proper gentlemen, it's only fair.

On the contrary, I think neither should "have" to go to finishing school.

If they want to. The average male probably wouldn't need to as much as a woman. (Fortunately?)
13 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 1/27/07 - 10:23:58 AM EST (GMT-5)
do people even still go to finishing school?

As far as the name implies "polishing the outside," I agree. I would like, however, to see their mission shift more toward developing a more internal social conscience, and that would be appropriate to both genders.
A former student of mine once brought up that at his older sister's college, there were rape awareness classes (possibly required, I can't remember, but certainly standard issue) for *female* students. Why not males, too? I know rape victims are many times over more likely to be women, but why not educate the more likely potential perps, too? I'm sure there are a lot of rapeists out there who are sincerely ignorant that they are actually rapists.

No. That's incredible stupid.
I'm so tired of this trend of feminizing guys.
13 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 1/27/07 - 10:56:59 AM EST (GMT-5)
See, I think it's wrong to *think* of it as "feminizing." Why isn't it *humanizing*?
13 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 1/27/07 - 10:59:47 AM EST (GMT-5)
So....because my opinion doesn't match yours, doesn't make it "Wrong", thanks.
13 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 1/27/07 - 11:02:19 AM EST (GMT-5)
Defensive much?
I'll rephrase: What is "feminizing" about teaching a boy about etiquette, social graces, and manners?
13 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 1/27/07 - 11:10:16 AM EST (GMT-5)
EVERYTHING.
Finishing school is meant for GIRLS, not guys.
it seems that lately guys have been starting to turn feminine. And it's odd.
I don't know; I can't explain it.

13 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 1/27/07 - 11:39:46 AM EST (GMT-5)
No, you can't. At least, you certainly haven't.
I'm going to try this again nonetheless: I know that finishing schools are traditionally for girls. Fine, fine. As for the skills taught there, what is "feminizing" about teaching a boy about etiquette, social graces, and manners? Further, what does "turn feminine" mean, and again, why would etiquette, et al, fall under that heading?
13 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 1/27/07 - 11:40:47 AM EST (GMT-5)
^ That's a bit.. I don't want to say "sexist" but well, it kind of is. Good manners aren't for women only.
13 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 1/27/07 - 12:15:13 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'm not going to argue with you.
I don't think guys should go to finishing school.
Go ahead and think I'm "wrong", ass
13 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 1/27/07 - 12:25:56 PM EST (GMT-5)
I was going to apologize for coming across too strong, but if you're going to resort to name-calling because I've asked more than once for clarification on a point that ought to be pretty simple to explain, forget it.
Here it is again: call the schools whatever you want, what is "feminizing" about teaching boys etiquette, manners, and social graces?
13 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 1/27/07 - 12:28:06 PM EST (GMT-5)
guys at finishing school?

what do we need help with? we already fart, belch, sit around in our shorts and scratch ourselves. how much more refined could we possibly get?

Um. No.
Guys should be guys.
None of this going to finishing school crap.
I prefer men to be just that: MEN.
If a guy told me he went to finishing school, I'd laugh in his face and ask if he was sure he was a guy.

13 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 1/27/07 - 12:45:01 PM EST (GMT-5)
No way, boys have no problem "finishing."

Look, I can only be so polite in pointing out again that you can CALL THE SCHOOLS WHATEVER YOU WANT. Call them fishing schools. Call them schools of hard knocks. Call them brokeback mountain sucked schools. When you get the name right, then explain to me why teaching boys manners, etiquette, and the social graces qualifies as "feminizing" them?
13 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 1/27/07 - 12:49:42 PM EST (GMT-5)
How is telling a guy that I think he's feminine for going to a finishing school knocking THE SCHOOL?!
Finishing school is FOR GIRLS.
I don't know how much clearer I can be!

How is it feminizing to teach guys the things girls learn in finishing schools?
13 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 1/27/07 - 12:56:50 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'm at a loss for words. Are you purposely being dense?
How many times do you want me to say "It's for girls, not guys" before you'll understand?
Guys don't have a need of going to a charm school.
That's for Southern belles and sh*t, not for guys.
I would much rather have a guy that would sit down and watch the game with me, then compare hairstyles.
13 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 1/27/07 - 1:02:10 PM EST (GMT-5)
I should ask you the same question, but then I'd probably get called names again.
From the story: etiquette is among many things learned in finishing schools.
From you: you're tired of this "trend of feminizing guys."
I have now asked repeatedly: why not treat guys etiquette? Do you know what etiquette is?
Go ahead and say "It's for girls, not guys" again. The "it" I CONTINUE to refer to (a point you'd have gotten the first time if you hadn't gotten defensive instead and opted for name-calling) is "ETIQUETTE, MANNERS, SOCIAL GRACES," NOT FINISHING SCHOOL.
I'd much rather watch a game than talk haristyles, too, but that's not at all what I have been talking about this entire time: why is teaching guys about how to behave in social situations "feminizing"?

*Teach* guys etiquette, that should read.
13 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 1/27/07 - 1:05:38 PM EST (GMT-5)
I don't think anybody intends to teach the guys to curtsy and hairdressing. They offer male specific courses. What's feminine about being polite and acting like a gentlemen?
13 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 1/27/07 - 1:09:49 PM EST (GMT-5)
To me this seems like a return to the Victorian era. Not that manners are bad, but I see these "finishing" schools as instilling a straitlaced correctness. Give me blunt honesty any day.
