Rosie O'Donnell says she's sorry for mocking spoken Chinese on 'The View,' but an association that represents journalists from diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds, including Chinese Americans, says it wasn't enough.

In a Dec. 5 segment, O'Donnell joked about how Danny DeVito's recent — and seemingly drunken — appearance on the ABC daytime talk show had become international news. 'You know, you can imagine in China it's like, 'Ching chong, ching chong chong, Danny DeVito, ching chong chong chong, drunk, 'The View,' ching chong,' ' the 44-year-old comedian said.

On Thursday's show, she told the audience: 'To say ching chong to someone is very offensive, and some Asian people have told me it's as bad as the n-word. Which I was like, 'Really? I didn't know that. Who's Online | Find Members | Private Messages

Do you think Rosie O`Donnell was being racist towards Asians on The View when she said `ching chong` to pretend to be talking like a Chinese person?
Rosie O`Donnell says she`s sorry for mocking spoken Chinese on `The View,` but an association that represents journalists from diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds, including Chinese Americans, says it wasn`t enough.

In a Dec. 5 segment, O`Donnell joked about how Danny DeVito`s recent — and seemingly drunken — appearance on the ABC daytime talk show had become international news. `You know, you can imagine in China it`s like, `Ching chong, ching chong chong, Danny DeVito, ching chong chong chong, drunk, `The View,` ching chong,` ` the 44-year-old comedian said.

On Thursday`s show, she told the audience: `To say ching chong to someone is very offensive, and some Asian people have told me it`s as bad as the n-word. Which I was like, `Really? I didn`t know that.`` Karen Lincoln Michel, president-elect of Unity: Journalists of Color Inc., said O`Donnell`s remarks `really didn`t sound like an apology to me.`

I honestly donnot think that she was being racist...I think it was a common mistake, and it is something that i wouldnt have thought to be offensive unless someone told me.

Yes, that was uncalled for!

Yes, like cryn_out said, it was uncalled for.

There was something about this in Generals I think.
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Monday 12/25/06 - 10:07:46 PM EST (GMT-5)
She grew up in a time that wasn't as severely politically correct as now, and I doubt she meant any harm.
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Monday 12/25/06 - 10:34:21 PM EST (GMT-5)
She shouldn't have done it in the first place.
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 12/29/06 - 7:16:44 PM EST (GMT-5)
BooHoo. Pfft.
As bad as calling a black person a N*gger? I think not.
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 12/29/06 - 7:45:27 PM EST (GMT-5)
Because Rosie said it and I hate looking at her yes she should be fired and never put on television again. But saying ching chong doesn't bother me.
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 12/29/06 - 7:57:29 PM EST (GMT-5)
She probably didn't mean any harm, but I thought it was in EXTREMELY poor taste.
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 12/29/06 - 9:16:40 PM EST (GMT-5)
No, she wasn't. She didn't speak the language and wanted to get her point acrossed. I cant' see anything worth pissing your pants over.
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 12/30/06 - 3:27:07 PM EST (GMT-5)
I agree with gammon that she could've said a lot worse, but the fact of the matter is, she's on a national TV show that probably has a diverse group of viewers, and her comments were potentially offensive.
Racist? I'm not sure. Unnecessary? Definitely.
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 12/30/06 - 3:28:25 PM EST (GMT-5)
I saw the video on youtube.

No, she wasn't being racist, but her act could probably be considered racially insensitive. In any case, she was foolish not to anticipate accusations of racism before she decided to do that schtick.

13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 12/31/06 - 2:49:50 PM EST (GMT-5)
I do not feel that it was intentional at all. She was not saying anything negative concerning another race at all. With that said, going forward she needs to really think before saying anything that could be construed as racial.
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Thursday 1/4/07 - 9:50:05 PM EST (GMT-5)
That's so idiotic, because that just made no sense at all, but I am not offended by it.

I feel offened and I'm NOT Chinese.
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 1/5/07 - 2:34:36 AM EST (GMT-5)
Rosie is going around offending everyone it seems lately. Is it to hard for one time to just shut your muth for a day and not yell at anyone? I don't even watch "The View", and all this attention with her each week is sickening. Two words- attention hore.
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 1/5/07 - 4:26:47 AM EST (GMT-5)
No I don't. I think she was just being her usual weird self.
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 1/5/07 - 4:38:48 AM EST (GMT-5)
I would really like for the 49% of people who answered yes to explain why this is racist.

Was she making fun of Chinese people? And if she was making fun of Chinese people (which I don't think she was), how does talking about Chinese people refer to all Asian people?

13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 1/5/07 - 5:12:07 AM EST (GMT-5)
No, if that's being racist, then every one is racist. You can't always be p.c...

Did anyone notice that most men said "yes" and women said "no"... isn't that odd

13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 1/5/07 - 5:25:37 AM EST (GMT-5)
It would have been a LOT worse if she'd used the words to describe Chinese people rather than the language. Because those definitely would have sounded like racial slurs.

And it's a bit different to make fun of the way a language sounds than it is to do the same of a certain ethnic group. A language isn't a race.

13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 1/5/07 - 7:51:11 AM EST (GMT-5)
If she stood up and talked like a stereotypical version of another race I bet she would have got in trouble... Chinese seem to be the acceptable target for unnecessary offensive comments. I don't think she was racist to Asian people - just being offensive to Chinese people.
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 1/5/07 - 8:57:09 AM EST (GMT-5)
Racist: no. Stupid: yes. She had one of those celebrity racial impulse moments that all the stars seem to be having.
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 1/5/07 - 9:58:57 AM EST (GMT-5)
NO, people are just too damn sensitive and find anything to get offended about.

SHE WAS MOCKING THEM! Whether or not she KNEW that the term was offensive (and I don't see how she couldn't) is inconsequential, she said it in a mocking way, she was making fun of a entire race of people and their native tongue.

13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 1/5/07 - 12:35:21 PM EST (GMT-5)
No. I'm so tired of uptight politically correct pricks. Another ten years and we'll all be walking around like zombies because everytime we open our mouth someone gets offended.

But anyways. It wasn't racist. Not like she's gonna learn Chinese to tell a joke now is it?
