Or sometimes understanding too much.
13 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Monday 9/25/06 - 2:10:10 PM EST (GMT-5)
Sometimes it is, like i'm scared of spiders, but not because I don't understand them!
13 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Monday 9/25/06 - 2:16:30 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think for the most part, yes. We fear what we don't understand, because it's foreign to us. We're out of out comfort zone.

Well said and I agree.

No, the things I fear most, are the things I've actaully experienced, at least in part. By that I mean: I've had plenty of broken bones: I fear heights. I know what that landing feels like.

Not always.. but sometimes, probably.
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 10/11/06 - 12:11:42 PM EST (GMT-5)
Sometimes it's knowing that whatever it is is actually dangerous. Understanding a bear in the wild is knowing that it could kill you and thus you *should* be afraid.
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 10/11/06 - 12:13:21 PM EST (GMT-5)
Not knowing.
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Saturday 10/14/06 - 8:26:11 PM EST (GMT-5)
Fear is just a feeling. With different explanations for each person.
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Friday 11/3/06 - 10:16:04 AM EST (GMT-5)
One can still be afraid of something they understand quite well. In some cases, understanding might lead to a greater fear than ignorance would.
13 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Wednesday 12/27/06 - 12:01:47 PM EST (GMT-5)
I don't think so
13 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Friday 1/5/07 - 9:54:13 AM EST (GMT-5)
Fear of the unknown, yes.
13 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Friday 1/5/07 - 10:16:29 AM EST (GMT-5)
In a way, yes. I think certain fears come natural to some people.
13 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Friday 1/5/07 - 10:17:58 AM EST (GMT-5)
No, not always but sometimes I think it can be.
13 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Sunday 1/14/07 - 12:00:14 AM EST (GMT-5)
Sort of. Fear is the unknown.
13 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Wednesday 1/17/07 - 4:56:41 PM EST (GMT-5)
No, but it can be.
13 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 2/7/07 - 3:43:31 PM EST (GMT-5)
Not all the time, but it is a pretty big part of it.
13 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 2/7/07 - 5:46:22 PM EST (GMT-5)
Sometimes.
However, if you come at me with a knife, I am afraid because I know it will hurt if you stab me, not because I don't understand.
13 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 2/7/07 - 5:48:52 PM EST (GMT-5)
Nah... It's fear that keeps us from jumping out of a skyscraper, but I think we all understand what would happen when we go 'splat' on the ground, so fear is not simply a lack of understanding.

However, people do tend to fear what they don't understand... That's a bit different, though.

12 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Thursday 5/10/07 - 2:48:29 PM EST (GMT-5)
Maybe for some, although for me, I have a fear of losing limbs/being eaten...I don't think I fear it because I don't understand.
12 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Tuesday 6/5/07 - 4:22:49 PM EST (GMT-5)
I don't think so, because I understand perfectly what will happen if I fall off a tall building, but that doesn't stop me from fearing it.
12 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Tuesday 6/5/07 - 4:27:26 PM EST (GMT-5)
fear is a defense mechanism to protect you from harm. If your body has reason to believe that the situation you are in could be harmful, it makes you feel fear to warn you of the danger it sees. Whether it is an actual danger or not is irrelevant, its what the mind thinks, probably based on past experience.
12 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Friday 11/9/07 - 2:52:02 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think it can be, but you can also understand exactly what it is you fear. It can work either way.

Yep. I think this holds equally true.

I know a good bit about snakes and I'm terrified of them. So, obviously not, this is just one of those silly things people say.
