When I worked at a theatre we did screen films at the start time, then counted heads to see if it matched number of tickets sold (at 30 minute intervals). If no one was in there at the first count they'd shut it off and prep the next reel.

I guess it wouldn't make very much sense to show a movie to an empty theater.

The bugs and such might like to have a movie to themselves once in a while.
