That extra "m" is for "Mwahahaha, I was first."

well I believe that all human concepts derive from nature so in a sense 'yes'. I think the instincts and feelings that go wrong and make people seem 'evil' are modern forms of behaviour that I'm sure developed in 'nature.'

nature is just doing whats in its nature.

Yes. Evil to us. Katrina. Duuuuhh..

Yes, I consider strong tornadoes and hurricanes to be evil.

By definition, that which is without a mind cannot be good or evil.

I had a disturbing experience the other day though, I rescued a duckling from a the parking garage at work (the city hall where I work is situated right on top of a pond with a lot of ducks). It was basically hopelessly lost down there, I found it, caught it and put it back in the pond.

It swam around happily for a few seconds, and headed straight for the first group of ducks it saw, the first duck it ran into, however, proceeded to grab the little duckling by the throat and started throwing it around and holding it under the water till it drowned.

I tried to intervene by scaring the duck off by throwing rocks around it, but it took me so long to find rocks that the duckling was dead by the time I got back.

I took it rather personally as I had just rescued the poor thing from the garage.

Tricky question, really. At the outset, I'd say nature is neither good nor bad because it is amoral, without a mind.

But, when I start thinking about that more, I'm not sure it really makes much sense. If you say that people human beings are natural, then that means we are amoral and can be neither good nor bad. On the other hand, if you say humans are not natural, then you need to come up with some justification for that statement and define what is or is not natural, something I've never been able to do satisfactorily.

I don't think nature as a whole is sentient and therefore it cannot be good or evil; it is amoral. But, individual entities that nature is composed of can be sentient and therefore may be moral.

Which is getting away from what is nature/natural and towards what is sentient. And I'm not sure that's less of a sticky question.

Often...

No it isn't evil. Nature has been doing what was nature meant to do since the beginning of time.
13 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Friday 9/15/06 - 12:07:30 AM EST (GMT-5)
No. It can't be. It's simply the way the Earth is. Nature here, while being completely different, doesn't really escape the fact that it's just a part of the planet, like Jupiter's gas or Mars' dust. Nothing is good or evil. It just is.
13 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Friday 9/15/06 - 12:24:18 PM EST (GMT-5)
no. it can be unintentionally cruel, though.

Katrina would have ripped through that exact spot whether New Orleans was there or not. Also, N.O. is not the first city to be decimated by wind and rain.

What? Are you serious? How can a weather pattern be evil? That's ridiculous.

12 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Wednesday 12/6/06 - 2:48:13 PM EST (GMT-5)
But...how can it be? Nature isn't even sentient--it's not capable of making its own choices period, let alone evil ones.
12 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Tuesday 12/12/06 - 2:08:09 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yes...the human nature is very evil. Why is it that we want to injure those that do us harm or why do we feel jealousy, pride etc?
12 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Monday 1/1/07 - 11:15:03 AM EST (GMT-5)

Exactly

Evil doesn't exist. Not even in us.

What we perceive as evil is rather a lack of something else, like empathy for instance. And a hurricane is obviously not capable of empathy.

To some extent, yes.
12 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Monday 1/22/07 - 9:54:01 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yes! Mosquitos eat you alive! And they bite thru anything! I'm sure they were biting thru one of those vinyl folding chairs at an outdoor play one year. And I'm one of those rare cases where the welts don't show up until the next day, so I didn't know they'd been biting the backs of my legs and my tush. I woke up itching like crazy and couldn't go back to sleep!

And sometimes the skunks around here REALLY stink up the neighborhood. You can even smell it with all your doors and windows closed!
