yes,

completly.

Yes, I love to watch Hollywood during the 20's to the late 50's, people seemed to care more about public image. Now it seems like all anyone cares about is whose boob fell out of their dress while walking down the red carpet, or who can get away with the most revealing dress.

Standards were so high back then. Judy Garland got so much crap because she didn't have the prototypical starlet look, despite the fact that she was one of Hollywood's biggest names. If I remember correctly, it actually drove her into depression.

I think the bar really needed to be lowered. Maybe not to the standards set by the Paris Hiltons and the Tara Reids, but that "glamour" look was an extremely exclusive club.

I'd say that most actresses do lack the glamour of past stars, but there are a few who are still very classy.
13 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Monday 7/17/06 - 11:44:30 PM EST (GMT-5)
Oh yeah.
13 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Tuesday 7/18/06 - 7:56:20 AM EST (GMT-5)
Absolutely, there's no such thing as glamour any more.
13 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Tuesday 7/18/06 - 8:04:33 AM EST (GMT-5)
Some, are still classy. Lads of them appear sleazy.
13 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Wednesday 7/19/06 - 2:12:25 AM EST (GMT-5)
Oh absolutely. Most of the actresses today look horrible and fake.
13 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Wednesday 7/19/06 - 3:14:09 AM EST (GMT-5)
Yes.

There are still a lot of really pretty actresses, like Kate Beckinsale, but then you have the unnaturally rail-thin and tanorexic ones, some even look like men. Meh.

modern actresses are all terible, give me the seventies, where any actress/actor could randomly burst into song and release a hit record, now that what i call glamour
13 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Wednesday 7/19/06 - 1:52:25 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yes and I think that is largely due to the paparazzi presence now. There is no mystery left with many actresses. Greta Garbo was so mysterous because the public never saw pictures of her wearing flip flops to go get her coffee or whatever. They actresses of that period seemed super human almost because we never saw them doing normal, everyday things. So, in effect, it's *our* fault that actresses have lost their glamour. If magazines didn't make a gazillion dollars by having pictures of certain celebs in their magazines they wouldn't pay for those pictures, those pictures wouldn't be taken, and actresses would still seem beyond reach.

I think the color vs. black and white movies has a bit to do with it, as well. Black and white is inheriently more glamourous and intriguing. Also, it tends to hide imperfections better so it hightens the sense of extraordinary beauty.

I just watched Gilda with Rita Hayworth. Good lord would they never have a performance with such mystique and glamour today.
13 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Sunday 7/23/06 - 5:35:20 PM EST (GMT-5)
I kind of like the fact that they aren't so mysterious. Like we don't have to worship some superhuman beautiful people. Everyone makes mistakes and is human. Our "gods" are more like the roman gods of old.

The woman on the left looks like Scully from X-Files. Maybe that's just because I've just seen 10 straight episodes of the X-Files. To answer the question: yes.

That's Greta Garbo, pal.

Scully does have that old fashioned beauty.

Yeah they have.

It's imtentional... In the 20's and 30's "Movie Stars" were encouraged to live a form of fantasy lifstyle to add mystique and allure to the whole escapism of their movies. By the 60's there was more of a realistic approach to movie making and the days of glamour were all but over.
Today it seems to be more about action and special effects.

I think I'd rather have the glamour over the non-god-like celebrities of today. Give me a little mystery, something to fantasize about. Reality's gotten way too real. I don't want to see Britney Spear's ugly toes.
12 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Saturday 6/16/07 - 6:57:43 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yes, but I think that is mainly because of the paparazzi and the red carpet.
12 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Friday 10/5/07 - 1:14:50 AM EST (GMT-5)
Yes, in many, many ways. The actresses of the past seem so classy compared to those of today.

I totally agree... had the public known about the personal lives of many of those names, things would have been quite different.

Yes, probably...
